Catched piece is not correct

Post by sorim » Thu Nov 17, 2011 11:50 am

In the game
http://www.slowchess.com/viewgame.cgi?p1=g1105081447
at move 15 I promote a pawn to a N and this N will be catched.

Now below of the board I see as catched piece a (additional) N.
I think it should be only a pawn.

Thanks.

I believe you're incorrect. The pawn transformed before being captured.
Actually it should show the knight and the promoted pawn imo.

Hopefully others will weigh in also.

You can see two white knights catched and one white knight on the board.

If you look the catched pieces you see
white lost 2 N 2P
black lost B and N and 3 P
so the difference is one pawn for white.

If you take a look at the board you see white is with one Bishop in advance
and both have equal pawns.

Pawn was promoted to a Knight
- thus only 7 Pawns remain on record
This Knight was captured as well as another
- thus 2 Knights 'catched' and 1 remaining in play

There's not really a standard for displaying captured pieces. A lot of the GUIs today have begun showing the advantage, rather than captured pieces. I just chose to show the actual piece that was captured, mainly for simplicity of programming. It's pretty tough to keep track of which piece was promoted and when it's captured.
