Nils,

as you know I've been there many times because of my marriage but not once for as good a reason as you're finding there now.

Bestest,
David

Hi all.

Sorry for no updates, but I was very busy as a volunteer. I worked in the background for the bulletin/website and live sending, trying to find the interesting games and episodes during play.

The election was a farce. Kasparov's campaign was aimed at the wrong target; other players instead of the people that voted. FIDE is unfortunately very much a "boys club", not a democracy. I was told that many votes went for 20000 US dollars per country. The whole circus was very demotivating, I'm not going to work for FIDE again, unless there's a total change, so very likely no more Chess Olympiads for me.

The arrangement is also growing to be too big, even a country as rich as Norway had problems funding everything, and the arbiters actually voted it the worst Chess Olympiad ever! They had themselves to blame, in parts. With one arbiter per match, the money it took to transport, host and feed more than 160 arbiters from all over the world clearly hurt other parts of the budget. It didn't help that the playing venue the politicians promised when Norway applied was never built. The replacement arena was pretty bad, toilets were of the portable type, and they could only air out the huge hall during afternoon and night. I saw someone claim it took 16 hours to exchange all the air completely.

Personally I had a good time, the weather was extremely good for Tromsø, in fact it was warmer than NY most of the time.
