A sad note about Jeff Jones...
A sad note about Jeff Jones...
My friends, it is with great sadness that I must tell you what I learned two nights ago.
I was chatting online Wednesday with Jeff Jones. He told me that he had just returned from 5 1/2 weeks in the hospital. He said he was in alot of pain.
He also told me he has cancer. Aggressive cancer.
He said that it is spreading too fast and that it is too late. He says that he is still in shock and is trying to figure out how to cope and get his personal affairs in order.
Jeff is still rather young. He called the cancer malignant, but I think he what he meant to say is that it is terminal. He was definitely NOT the same Jeff Jones that I remember. He was very sad and serious, which is really no surprise to me, either, considering his condition.
He didn't give me any indication, but implied that he does not have much time left to live.
I am sure that he will see this post, so I would think that any post you make here, he will also see.
I would think that any prayers and/or kind words would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

Words are inadequate to express my shock and sadness in learning
of Jeff's plight.
Jeff,if you read this, please know that my thoughts and prayers are
with you as,I'm absolutely certain, are those of everyone on this
site who has had the pleasure of meeting up with you here over
the last six plus years.

this is a very sad tiding indeed.
Jeff, my thoughts are very much with you. I hope you can find peace at heart. We only met through e-mail and the chessboard, but I've enjoyed your brightness very much here.
Hamot, thanks for bringing this -sad- tiding : I was worried for some time now about Jeff not playing anymore. I wish the news would have been better, and bringing such news is not a pleasant thing to do.
there really are no proper words i can find...

Jeff, despite the fact that you've played against or spoken with practically everyone on this site, I've never known you to step on anyone's toes. You are always the one who can be counted on to remind us that chess is a game, that we are here to have fun...to wave your zap-stik around, simultaneously menacing and non-threatening, silly and respectable.jpettit wrote:I've stared at the blank screen for some time now. I simply don't know what to say.
Jeff, hang tough, buddy. We've joked about a lot of stuff, but this isn't funny. I wish you the best in whatever needs wishing.
Know that you've earned the respect and friendship of countless players in the more than six years you have played here.
Know that you are a good part of why this site often feels more like a community than a collection of strangers with a mutual interest.
Thank you, Jeff, and blessed be.

Jeff, I can't stop thinking about you and the impact you've had on this
site for over 6 years!
The 101 thematics that you organized, the fun all of us had in imagining
when "The Zapper" would strike again, the many serious and funny messages you would post on this forum and on and on.
Suffice it to say that no one could possibly love this game more than
you have or been a better ambassador for Net-Chess.
I remember several years ago my telling you that you had to reduce
the number of games you were playing, that 150 games at once was
too much like homework.
I think you trimmed down to about 100 games and even though you
didn't exactly say so,I got the distinct impression that you only wished
that homework was this much fun!!!
I do so earnestly wish you the best and am so sorry that anyone as
good and right as you should have to go through such trouble.
All my best,
David

The Zzzzzapper
here's to one of the great individuals to participate in this site and one of my oldest opponents who schooled me on many occasions.
Hey Jeff, remember that time when you did play-by-play on Wrestlemania for us over email and AIM? Those were Good times my dear old friend, and no matter where ever you go, never forget the good times and keep on smiling and rock on!
You were one of the first people I met on netchess and through all the talk of zappin' and Britney Spears, I'd liek to think we became pretty good buds, we shared some good and sad stories in teh past, and when I saw this, to say that my heart sank, is a gross understatement...
I'm sorry that I haven't been round much these few parts, and I truly wish there was something we can do to help... I'm truly sorry to hear about this... you are deep in my thoughts and prayers Jeff, you'll always be there.

Very sad ...
My English is not good ...
I only can give the words from the bible :
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Psalms (23:1-3)

Jeff:
I want to tell you that the games we have played online have been creative, fun, and I can't wait to get home from work to see what new move you have made. I have only been on this site for almost 2 years but it gives me great joy. I will dedicate my next 100 wins to you my friend.
My family is praying for you...you are in God's hands ...he will take care of you.

enjoyed chess for thirty years...have lots of books and mags but never time to study. Maybe when I retire...chess strength has gone done ratings are unrealistic
Dear Jeff,
We haven't talked or played before, but you manage put a smile on my face with your Zaps and humorous posts, which always have a quirky angle and some great relevance to it, and whenever i saw a post by you i would look forward to reading it before even reading the subject line, few have that ability and besides from dear friends that is a first for me on an internet basis and that has often lightened up my day, littearally!
What you are going through must be very hard and lonely so if you ever need a friend or someone who have been through some hard times, you are more than welcome to PM me and know you can talk about anything you might need, no exceptions!
Warm regards
Jonas

Dear, Jeff
I wish the best things for you. It has been a pleasure knowing you and playing you on this site. You have one of the best attitudes I've ever met over the board or online. I sincerely hope that your luck changes for the better.
Thank you,

A true gentleman and a great chess buddy!!
Simply the best.
I cannot say more than that, my thoughts fall short of saying anymore.
A pleasure to have shared time on net-chess with you and I hope that your time is full of great memories and if I could offer you something which could forestall the cancer I'd be more than happy to share it with you.
Regards,
Kenny

Hi Jeff,
You may have been on the other end of some of my chess games, as an anonymous intellect. But the beauty of technology in todays world is that lives can touch other lives. Life can be hard at times but life is what we have been given. I'm sure your life will live on in the memories of your family, friends and all those whose lives you have touched.
Please continue to draw on the love of those who surround you, as we are all really one family on this incredible planet we have been born to.

Dear Jeff,
How is it possible that so much people have the same question at the same time? Why you Jeff, and why now?
It still give's me a smile, when i remember our games and specialy the conversations. It is an honour to know you!
We meet again, and play another game, on a real chess-board, somewhere, sometime....
my greatest respect,
janick

Tim (hamot), I don't know if Jeff is still viewing msgs in this forum or not. But could you please be sure he gets this. Thank you.
Jeff, when I first read this msg, I really felt bad for the guy. But, then when I realized who it was, I felt worse for not sending a response sooner. For that, I apologize. I have always enjoyed playing against you and even more our conversations. But what I really want you to know is that as long as there is life in your body, it is never over.
My favorite passage of scripture in the Bible is Proverbs chapter 3, verses 5 and 6. Verse 5 reads "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not unto your own understanding." Verse 6 reads "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths."
God is simply telling us here to stop trying to figure things out ourselves. Allow Him to figure it out for us. "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways" saith the Lord. "For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways" saith the Lord. (Isaiah chapter 55 verses 8 & 9)
I know that this is a very difficult situation for you, but the Word of God is true. JESUS is real and HE is a healer. Romans chapter 10 verse 13 says "For whosoever shall called upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." The greek definition for the word saved here is to deliver, heal, preserve, be made whole. We always think of Jesus as our Deliverer from hell, which He most certainly will do. But, He is also our Deliverer from whatever we need deliverance from here on earth.
I pray that you do put your trust in God and His Word. I pray for total healing in your mind, body and spirit. I also pray that you be encouraged and never give up. If you would like to talk to me offline, don't hesitate to email me @ gkk3368@comcast.net. If you like, we can exchange numbers as well. I looking forward to hearing from you.
Glenn

Any news on Jeff
Having seen the many messages of support for Jeff, I was just wondering if anyone had an update on his present condition as I haven't seen any messages on that side.
I am holding onto the thought that things will improve but know that the progress of the cancer may have been too advanced to make that possible.
Hang on the light inside yourself buddy.
Thinking of you from a distance.

I am equally disheartened by this news. I kept on reading the messages on the thread but couldn't quite find my own words to express my sadness.
I've known Jeff since I started pushing virtual pawns and knights in this site. We've had several "heated" matches, and I'd stay late at night till the wee hours of the morning just to keep up with him. He's almost maniacal in his passion for chess. And it shows in his true gentleman character since we became "virtual friends".
Hey, Jeff, have you forgotten me, Dennis from Manila? Just stay there, my friend. I am not quite prayerful but in this case, whatever is left in my spirituality, I've dedicated them to you.
Thanks...

May you have good games now and in the future
May God bless you
Jeff Jones,
You and I met when this website was in its infancy. We played, chatted, and laughed a lot.
I was so busy with life until I dropped in to find you when I saw these posts. I am speechless when I read the them..
I say my prayer and wish you a speedy recovery..

jeff,
Best of luck. sorry to hear of your sickness its was always a lessen learned when I played you. I lost my wife this past year and havent been playing much since. I did use the site for countless hours while I sat at her bedside. It was an escape. may God grant mercy and peace on you in this very troubling time. It was an honor playing with you.
God Bless Jimmy

Hi Jeff and all the people who care about him,
I never ever played with him or exchanged some words.
As a biology student I know cancer only from textbooks or lectures, but I harbor a very split feeling. As a fascinated "scientist", trying to learn and understand how cancer and other phenomena develop, I really would feel terribly helpless when someone asked me why he's affected, but others not.
I wish there would be an entity, somewhere out there, who could give us those answers.
I hope to hear that Jeff recovers well, and I wish him and his family much strength and luck,
david/dcroll
