Entrants for small monthly invitational tournaments wanted!
I'm looking to having small, fast monthly tournaments each month beginning in April or May. The time controls would be 5d + 1d, and would have about 4 - 6 players per event. Ideally, I'd like to have the type of player who doesn't abandon a lot of games without good reason. Perhaps a maximum of 5% o...

Repeat & Continual time-out offenders poll: Penalization
Well, this is my last rant on the topic for now. What does everyone else think? Should repeat time-out offenders be penalized? And how? Losing accrued time? Earlier fofeit times? An option in the Challange Page, to screen out offenders from Open Tournaments? A way to 'evict' (or "unjoin") them from ...

Hmmm...never post a poll when you're tired and have a horrible toothache! I think that's my lesson for the day! Well, without getting into logic theorem and games theory with 'joelag' or getting 'langeli's firing squad ready, I think I'll just agree with helig. I'll put up a new poll with cor...

Penalize Repeat Time Out Offenders?
Just a thought, but maybe we post open tournaments, there could be a setting on the challange page (a slide-bar perhaps, or a similar line to the Min/Max rating area) that would allow us to screen out those players who abandon games on a frequen basis? I KNOW I continually harp on this, but for some...

Excuse me, but life happens. I also have a good amount of time forfeits, most of them took place some years ago when I didn't plan ahead and got stuck with weeks of exams/moving to another city/no Internet. Yes, people make mistakes. I don't know about these people but I'm offended to be included i...

Usually players that time out never come back to the site, so there's no way to penalize them. I've yet to see a regular player who frequently times out. Also, frequent players may time out on many games due to understandable circumstances. True enough, Greg. But I've taken a look and I've compiled...

Logical Forfeit in 2009 Open?
If there was ever to be an arguement made to penalize players who abandon games constantly, by early forfeits, I think I found it! And, although I'm not sure just how tactful this is, I'm going to name the player as I present my case! (Heck, I always wanted a chance to be a procecuting attorney; now...

I have often been annoyed by the type of unsportsmanlike behaviour being discussed as well! It never ceases to amaze me how some players respond on a regular basis when the game is even, or when they have the edge. But, if things are going against them, it's 'bye-bye Birdie" - they suddenly drop off...

Starting an 'Invitational' Tournament
Hoping that Greg or somebody can help me out here - Supposing I wanted to set up a 4-player tournament (I know they're called 'Matches', but what the heck?) and besides myself, I wished to invite 3 particular players? I'm not sure how I would handle that, or even if it can be done with the current l...

Greetings All! I'm having something of the same problem in one game -my opponent shall be nameless- but there's a slight difference. In the Tournament, I have 5 points, and a win against him would give me the tournament victory, and he has three other games remaining (besides the one with me). He IS...

I'm pretty new to this site, but love it (Thanks, Greg!), and I was noticing myself the disparity in ratings in some of the 2009 Open Tournaments. My own has ratings from 2748 down to 1746, mine being 2149. The tournament has an average of 2286. I'm closest to dead centre as it turns out. A bit daut...

Re: When to resign
My God, David has summed up the whole thing in one very telling sentence! I almost think that should be mandatory reading for anyone playing the game!davidswhite wrote:To allow your clock to time out in a lost position instead of resigning punctually is a sure tell that you are seriously lacking any chess maturity.

Happy New Year All! Regarding resigning, I tend to think that the position and the time controls should be a factor when figuring out whether to resign or not. If things are totally hopeless (barring your opponent having a lobotomy one move before mate) then the gentlemanlly thing to do is resign. B...
