DRAWS
Does the system recognise draws? I found a game (g1105333415) KBvK which is a draw by insufficient material and they have played for over 50 moves like that. I know the iOS app Chess Friends doesn’t recognise a simple draw by repetition and my opponent kept playing on and on and wouldn’t accept the ...

Re: Rating Inflation
I started playing here in 2012 and since then the pool of active players would have declined. Also the number of games played would be less which would change the ratings somewhat. I take the point that the pecking order would remain much the same. I like to think that I’ve improved, most likely by ...

Are our ratings becoming inflated? Activity has declined over the last few years and with a lower membership could explain any inflation.

Turochamp has a most unusual style in that it tends to avoid exchanging pieces. Cost me $7.99 for the full version as the free version just makes blunders.

Turing’s Machine
Found a new app for the iPad called Turing’s Machine. A modern adaptation of Tourochamp, Alan Turing’s 1947 chess program/evaluation function+search ideas. Although the evaluation function is basic it can play up 2000 elo using modern processors etc. A lot of fun.

Been working on this: http://www.net-chess.com/newboard/test.html It scales to the width of the screen, but not the height yet, so you might have to make the window smaller. I really need that larger board now. I had my cataracts done 3 years ago and now my vision is starting to haze up, so it's of...

The lower your rating the less important are the opening moves. Computer analysis shows that at my level I make weak moves and blunders more often than I care to admit. What is the use of playing the opening like a strong GM and then playing the rest of the game like a 1600 patzer?

The System apparently recognises draws by repetition but not by insufficient material. Next comes draws by the 50 move rule.

Previously to playing on Net-chess.com I HATED to lose. I'd even sulk and not make a move for a few days. But having lost hundred of on-line games both here and elsewhere losing is no longer a big deal. Online chess has also helped me stay calm when playing over-the-board, as after playing a thousan...

Thanks Abiodun, your appreciation is appreciated. Your three methods of study are exactly what the chess writer IM Cecil Purdy recommended, especially the study of your own games. I am pretty useless with regular computers but I can manage an iPad. An iPhone is on my wish list.

Chess players these days are generally stronger than 20 years ago because we have so many aids to improvement, especially with iPads, tablets and smart phones, as they are so easy to use. My rating here on Net-chess went up when I started playing against the engine apps on the iPad. It used to avera...

I know other sites have thematic openings. For example GameKnot and Chess.com have preset thematic openings, which is good and well, but what if you wanted the position after 1.a3 a6 2.b3 b6 3.c3 c6 4.h3 h6 5.g3 g6 6.f3 d6 ? The possibilities are infinite here on net-chess. I'd be pleased to know if...

Net-chess.com is my favourite chess site. I mostly play correspondence games and I find this site suits me fine. The proposed new board looks great and is equal to anything out there. I realise that the preferred option is to set up a real chess board. Hey, we are so fortunate to have chess-net.com. Ive just been browsing on Chess.com and there is a great deal a paranoia about cheating, especially in vote chess (!!) and daily chess. Re: ratings
According to one member's forum post you'd need to subtract 800 from your net-chess rating to get an approximate Elo rating. My ACF rating is 1480 (Glicko), so maybe you'd need to subtract 900, but I like to think Ausralian ratings in the lower range are depressed by about 100 or so. So 1600-1700 US...

Ratings floor and ceiling, does it help accuracy ?
Seems a lot of players are bouncing off the floor of 2100 and a few bounce off the ceiling of 3000. Surely this distorts those ratings close to these limits, or does it make the system more accurate?

Ramesis seems to always make the game last as long as possible by making moves until faced with a mate in one, then he will time out. Your opponent has 17 and 19 days left. It can be annoying when opponents time out, but not much can be done about it. I had a case where my opponent blundered a rook so just he just timed out, which took over 60 days. I emailed Greg Miller but nothing was done.
