Something I didn't know about tournaments
... is that you can't challenge a few people and leave some spots open. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I started a match for a few family and friends (by the way, jkavanagh, jakavanagh, and akavanagh are all different people). I though it would be interesting to leave a spot open for an "outsider" ...

Thoughts on openings
I'm someone who plays fairly well for a not-serious player - I haven't been in a chess club since high school and will get stomped by anyone who's much smarter or has studied in any disciplined way. However, a friend was asking me about openings the other day - why there wasn't a clearly-defined bes...

Best player I ever played was an illiterate truck driver - not that I'm very good, but he was so much better that we might have been from different planets. No fun for either of us, and I can usually make a good player think. My favourite regular opponent was in my high school club - very evenly mat...

Yes, I did mean notepad. But I still can't make it work. Whether I write in the small box or press "Edit" to get the larger notepad, there doesn't seem to be any way I can save a comment unless it's my turn. I can write them, but they won't save. Am I missing something obvious? Heaven knows I do tha...

Is there some way to edit comments when it's not my move? Sometimes I look the games over while I'm waiting and something occurs to me.

Of course it's not over till it's over, especially if the guy is as much better than me as his ranking shows. But still, he's about to lose his queen for a rook, to no advantage I can see. You can understand why it's frustrating for me not to see if I could make this count. Thanks for looking at it ...

I wonder if you might find a soft or hard-shell case for some sort of musical instrument - a small percussion instrument, a set of Orff bells, something like that. Most attaché or laptop cases would be rectangular, and one side too short. There might also be something like a salesman's supply case ...

The player who times out always gets scored a loss. The only point in letting one of those games time out would be to deprive you of the win, which isn't very common. It's happening to me in three or four games in my first month. It's frustrating. If it's done deliberately, it seems like bad manners.

I'm in my first tournament, and really enjoying myself. I've never played online except informmally with people I know, and I'm impressed by the way it works. I wondered about people abandoning lost games instead of resigning, and I'm searching all the threads about it. I resigned like a gentleman i...
