Re: What have happen with Net-Chess?
Net-Chess is the Narnia of the chess-Internet. Whereas time marches on and new chess sites rise and fall like the sun (as redketchuplover carefully chronicles in the one forum), Net-Chess is always here, always the same, always ready for a game. I've played off-and-on since near the beginning, and t...

Re: Analyzing mode shared!
I'm not sure I completely follow. Are you suggesting: a) When a game is finished, players can go back and add comments and variations in a correspondence-style post mortem? These comments could either be private, restricted to the two individuals, or public for all to see. or b) MrX, a high-rated pl...

Re: Tips for the Chess Player..in general.
On a more serious note, it is possible to intimidate your opponent on the chess board irrespective of body language. I have seen people completely overact to an early h4 thrust; they worry that a huge attack is coming, so they start worrying and play desperate and next think you know they have self-...

Re: Tips for the Chess Player..in general.
Josh, such a series could be very useful. If I may, I would like to add a comment. All your rules are more or less correct, but they don't give any justification. There's an old writing axiom of show, don't tell. If you could SHOW why these rules work, as opposed to just telling them, people would g...

Re: Winning percentage
I'm not sure if I have the terminology correct, but... My stats: 596 games played 328 wins 237 loses 31 draws (draws are overrated) My straight winning percentage would be my number of wins divided by my total games played. Thus 328/596= 0.55, so I straight out win 55% of my games. However, chess al...

Re: Weekend Tournament
Nice games Joshua. I really admire your play in that Slav gambit. It's so tempting to play rash when down a pawn, but you calmly and methodically improved your position and won it back about 25 move later. That type of patience is really hard to grasp, at least for me. Enjoy your money!

Strictly speaking, he doesn't 'lose' his Knight. If 5.e5, Black has ...h6. If the Bishop exchanges, then no worries. If the Bishop moves off the d8/h4 diagonal, then the pin is broken and the Knight is free to move. And finally, if 6.Bh4, Black pushes his pawn with 6...g5 and once more the pin is br...

I believe the highest a provisional rating can start with is 2000. So, you can set the rating limit as 2001-9999 and you should effectively eliminate all provisional encounters. Of course, this only works if you regularily play above 2000, and there are many players hovering around 2000 that you'll ...

An Ode to a Friend
I fell in love with a smile, and a pair of murky green eyes, and the kindest being on the planet. Waking up was no longer a choir: it became a garden of heaven, bearing the fruit of joy and the nectar of triumph. It was a friendship of mortals allowed to dance in the houses of the Gods. Singing the ...

I've noticed, in my limited teaching experience, that beginners have an insatiable habit to play the first move that comes to mind, and if that move is a capture, all the better! Players of this rank play lightning fast and the game is usually decided by earning two or three more queens than the opp...

I used to play 1.b4 as a surprise opening, maybe once every 15-20 games or so. My enthusiasm for it greatly diminished, however, after seeing Gregorgysi's line here. Black isn't trying to refute the opening: he justs sets up a supported centre and plays his game from there. There's a slight lose of ...

The easiest way to do this would be to incorporate one of Greg's earlier suggestions: a time limit. Essentially, a time limit suggests that, if set at ten days, a person will never have more than ten days between moves, no matter how many moves are made in rapid succession. So, we could set up a gam...

This one might be interesting. In the user profile section, could their be a new field that shows how many moves a player has made? I play chess for one big reason: it's fun. Winning is a nice bonus. I sincerely hope that everyone who plays chess on this site, or any site, has fun doing it. It seems that every three weeks, another topic is made about time-outs. Most of these are the same questions: Do I get a win? Does it count as a loss? Why aren't they moving?, etc. I propose a Time-Out FAQ. Maybe it could be a link on the home page or perhaps a sticky on the Forum. Either way, perha...
