Is phandorum a phantom?

Post by cliff » Wed Dec 01, 2010 11:28 pm

Something odd here.....check this out:

Opponent] Rating Date Game
phandorum 2500 12/01/2010 g1105052440 2100 2100 0 n
phandorum 2500 12/01/2010 g1105052438 2100 2100 0 n
phandorum 2500 12/01/2010 g1105052442 2100 2100 0 n
phandorum 2500 12/01/2010 g1105052441 2100 2100 0 n
phandorum 2500 12/01/2010 g1105052439 2100 2100 0 n
phandorum 2000 12/01/2010 g1105052437 2100 2100 0 n

This is from kasparian's game history. The odd thing is found if you look at phandorum's rating history:

Opponent Rating Date Game
kasparian 2100 12/01/2010 g1105052440 2500 2500 1 y
kasparian 2100 12/01/2010 g1105052438 2500 2500 1 y
kasparian 2100 12/01/2010 g1105052442 2500 2500 1 y
kasparian 2100 12/01/2010 g1105052441 2500 2500 1 y
kasparian 2100 12/01/2010 g1105052439 2500 2500 1 y
kasparian 2100 12/01/2010 g1105052437 2000 2500 1 y

All these games ended on the first move, with kasparian resigning! That's what is so odd.
I suspect that kasparian has created a new alias, and is using his old one to artificially inflate the 'phandorum' persona's rating.

This is the main reason for inflated ratings on these chess sites I think!

Shame that people feel these cheats and angles in what should be such an enjoyable game....

their loss though.

Even if that's the case, that wouldn't work. When an opponent resigns on the first move on this site, your rating does not improve, does it?

Not before the 10th move, anyway. And the rating is provisionnal for 20.

The way I understand it, although I could be wrong, is that if you time out before 10 moves, the game is not counted. However if you resign on any move the game is official.

lubo recently timed out against me on the 3rd or 4th move and that game is unofficial and not counted in my rating or games record. Coli timed out also recently on the 10th move in two games, and they do show in my rating history and games record.

I'm pretty sure that's how it works anyway.

And I still think those games are odd, don't you guys?
