Any Players Interested in Chess Team Tournament?

Post by cliff » Sat May 08, 2010 10:49 pm

Joshua (iamachessstudent), Brian (islanderfan) and myself have been considering trying to organize a Chess Team Tournament. But before we proceed any further on it at this time, it's a good idea to find out just how many players are interested?

Anyone?

if not, maybe we'll just shelve the idea for now....

As an afterthought, anyone who IS interested should probably leave a comment, and if it does start sometime, we can get back to you.

Thx

I am interested but wouldn't be willing to participate in it until August.

Since we would be planning on a start date sometime in the Autumn, perhaps October or November, that wouldn't be a problem.

Good news:I'm willing to play

Bad news:I'll be using my brain

Well, it seems the idea is not quite dead, but not ready to fly at this time, either. After some discussion, Brian, Josh, and myslef have decided to try again in the Fall.

Interested individuals so far are: Redketchuplover, Dparment, Islanderfan,
Iamachessstudent, and Ciff.

Other potential players would be: Johnrbrown, Jvanmechelen, and perhaps one or two more.

Anyone else interested in participating this fall can leave a comment here, and we'll revisit the idea then, and get back to everyone. In the meantime, if anyone is interested in starting something earlier, mention that also, and maybe we can put together a two 4-player or 5-player teams and have a smaller event to test the waters!

Thanks.

How about a Net-Chess team challenge of another chess site?

Post by energy » Sat May 22, 2010 3:36 am

Then there could possibly also be a qualifying tournament first, to decide who's on the Net-Chess team, and in what order.

The team match could be double, one match here, and one on the other site. Or it could be like in weird sports (like hockey  ), with 7 matches...

Actually Nils, we weren't talking about playing other sites (at least I wasn't!), we were more or less thinking along the lines of a 'house league', so to speak.

I hadn't considered the fact that we may have made the proposal a bit too ambiguous.

No, sorry about that, it was me being unclear, at least if you missed my subject:

"How about a Net-Chess team challenge of another chess site?"

In other words it's a new suggestion, triggered by the somewhat lacklustre response for a full league...

After all, recruiting a single team must be easier than a handful of them?

Ah, Now I understand! That's a good idea, and I can see it would still take a bit of work, but still doable! And as you say, recruiting players for one team should be easier than recruiting players for six or seven teams. And, as an added bonus, if this were to go over well, if might spark more of an interest in the "Team house league' idea!

:D

A matter of prelininary questions:

Any idea which other sites we'd challange? Stans Net-Chess is a pretty good one. It was the first place I played, and I liked it quite a bit until I was lucky enough to find Net-Chess.

How may boards the team would have? If history (and Murphy's Law) is any indication the players not interested in a house league would all be interested in a Inter-Site Series. How would they be decided? Elimination tournaments like the Zapper? And how many tournaments would that entail?

:?

I'm sure this could all be worked out though.

Thanks for the input. And ideas on these questions? From Nils or anyone?

bump.... curious if there is more interest for this now.

I would add it doesn't need to be a large team.

That's true, and about what I would look for is a team of four or five players.
Assuming, we go with the idea of challanging another chess site (which would be my preference at this time), I'd wager we'd get a good number of entrants in a short time.

In the brief flurry of posts, after this topic started in late May, we'd have iamachessstudent, islanderfan, debutler, energy, redketchuplover, deparmet, and myself. We cold certainly start with those players, and figure out the rest from there.

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, the current interest level doesn't seem high enough to merit much more work at this point. Since there were a fair number who would be interested at a later date, perhaps we could revisit this in the fall.

If anyone has any other ideas though, it would be interesting to hear them!

I'd say it could be useful to know if anyone knows or plays at any other site. I used to play at http://gameknot.com/ and http://www.chess-server.net/ and probably still have an old account at the latter site. If there's no better suggestion (in a week or two), I'll post a query there.

Good suggestions for sites, guys.

If no one else comes up with anything then, I'll also see if I can post something in the forum at Stans Net-Chess. IF I can remember my nickname and password....it's been a long time....

Jvanmechelen and Pwilliows play on chess.com also. Maybe I could get them to do the same. But how many should we do at once?

I have no idea.

Again, suggestions?

It goes without saying that I won't be participating in this as i'm leaving the site when my current 14 games finish. However, best of luck in the idea. Its a good one.

Thank you, dparmet. I wish our disagreement had have been more cordial, but that's water under the bridge.

I wouldn't worry about the "Team Chess" concept. I have cancelled all immediate plans for it anyway.

Best,

- Cliff
