Thanks Cliff for being so diligent with this timely posting, just as you promised to do so !
I'm about to start right after my post here, but I'm a bit confused about the members you show in this group [series] C of Round 1 .....???
Your second post lists different names than your first post, for the same group [series] .....???? Or am I reading this wrong ....????
Either way ...... I'm Ready .... Here We Gooooooooo ! ! !
P.S. Just figured it out I think you meant to wite B in your second post.

I thought about that also, Brian. But I figured, although the 2010 Open likely more than not runs itself, once begun, Greg still has the day to day glitches and questions to answer, and the reason is simply not enough time!islanderfan wrote:Hey Greg I know you have spots for the 2010 tourney and the others, why not put a link for our zapper one in there?
(We'll even cut him a bit of slack for sleeping and eating and working...)
And, in a way, the "co-op" way the Zapper is running, with a bit of help and work from the participants is kind of nice to, I think!

Dont forget to join your group in the Zapper tournament you set up
We are waiting on you lol
I wanna wish every1 the best of luck and I hope the games are very fun and competitive:)
Joshua
You sure about that, Joshua?
I checked on my end, and I see myself as entered! The only player that I see we're waiting on is 'gregorgysi'
(But wouldn't it be funny, if after all this, I was the one to mess up?)
We'll be playing soon, Joshua, and I'm looking forward to another great game!
Best of luck!

There's gonna be a "Rumble In The Jungle" ! ! !

Reminders have been sent out to stonedmaster, gregorgysi, strongplayer, and rhand regarding the tournaments start.
Round C, in the meantime, is quite well underway. A couple of interesting games shaping up, although most are still in the opening phases.
I'm looking forward to the games between David and Ramawolf as they develop! Should be quite a match!

One response to my reminders - rhand cancelled, so Series D will need to be reposted at least.
If there's no response from stonedmaster, strongplayer, and gregorgysi or if they haven't joined by Monday, we're going to have to make some alterations in the other three Series (A, B, and D) or Series C will be over before the others start at this rate!
Check back for more news Monday.
As for tonight, I have a rotten springtime cold, and feel like s--t!

Thanks, Joshua.
Feeling somewhat better today, but until the tournament actually gets more off the ground than it is at this stage, I'm not sure how "great" a job I'm doing yet. But I do sincerely appreciate the sentiment, my friend!
Anyway, what we have now is new lineups for three of the Series; A, B, and D:
A
Energy 2628
jvanmechelen (*) 2501
Johnb 2296
jpettit 2272
gmiller 2130
Average 2365
B
Iamachessstudent 2773
Abiodun 2773
Cliff (*) 2724
nhathuy 2279
redketchuplover 2235
Average 2557
D
martijn 2813
Jpost 2786
Mluka 2403
Pumpkin (*) 2328
Jsnyder 2016
Average 2469
As I had mentioned rhand cancelled in an email responding to my reminder, the other three, stonedmaster, strondplayer, and gregorgysi did not respond to either the reminder or last call emails I sent them. I can be slow answering emails sometimes, myself, but if it was a situation as this, have I been any of them, I would have had the courtesey to respond, considering the number of players waiting to start.
rhand is welcome to any other event such as this I try to organize, and certainly next years Zapper as well. The others need not apply!
pumpkin has agreed to fill a vacant spot in Series D, so we'll have five players in each of the unstarted Series, and since I have a hunch Mike (mluka) is still a bit busy moving and resettling, I've asked pumpkin to post that Series challenge. I'll be reposting mine tonight, and since jvanmechelen and I have a game in progress, I'll get him to repost Series A then also.
Hopefully, in a day or two, we'll have everything up and running smoothly!
To all those who have been patiently waiting to get playing, my appologies for the delays, and thanks for waiting!
Till tomorrow,
- Cliff.

Series A posted by jvanmechelen is still missing gmiller and energy. (Note: this Series was posted just yesterday or today, and reflects the new lineup. Even if you joined the first posted last week, you still have to rejoin this one!)
Series D is in limbo. I haven't heard from mluka in a week and haven't heard from pumpkin since he agreed to play on Sunday. I think it's a plot by George Bush to drive me crazy! Even retired, he's dangerous! )

By the way, I recieved a "Private Message" from one of our players in this tournament regarding gregorgysi. I won't use his name, since he wished to keep the matter private.
The most compelling argument he gave was;
"In short, I just wish to vouch for G's character. In the past, he has showed the upmost sportsmanship, moved frequently in both winning and losing positions and was a fun person to play against. Further, he was a frequent opponent of Jeff's. Your decision to ban Gregor along with the other two for being no-shows is perhaps too draconic of a measure, at least in Gregor's case."
The eloquence and logic of this paragraph, and indeed his entire letter, was such that I would certainly be a fool to argue with it!
i maintain my stance on 'stonedmaster' and 'strongplayer', but I too have played several games against gregorgysi, and I've found him to be nothing but a gentleman and good sport.
To this end, I would like to appologize to Gregor and I hope that he will be able to make it to next years' Zapper. My only defense is that I was fighting off a horrible sinus infection and cold, and my temper was likely a biit too hot at the time I wrote that.
Thanks all, and my appologies.

Some background on the origin of Jeff's "Zapper" m
During the early years of Net-Chess, when Greg was in constant pursuit of a dependable and affordable server, the system underwent periodic crashes.
When, after a few days or more, the system would be back up and running, there would invariably be several active games that failed to reappear. In spite of Greg's efforts many of those games were unable to be retrieved and were lost forever.
There was much complaining about the lost games and it seemed that a disproportionate number of them involved games in which Jeff's opponents claimed to have held winning positions and been unfairly denied their deserved wins. Their protests were absurd since it was patently evident that all washed out games had happened randomly.
However, our boy,Jeff, saw a good thing and grabbed hold of it with both hands. He claimed that yes,he did have a "Zap" stick and that any time he felt sufficiently provoked he would once again wield it and crash the system. We all had a good laugh with Jeff about his mock claim but, believe it or not, one or more members (at least at first)took him and his supposed ability seriously.
Because Jeff had been for so long a vitally important part of Net-Chess's success and because of the singularly courageous manner with which he dealt with his otherwise incapacitating disease over the last years of his life, I'm personally certain that we'd have honored his memory (thanks Cliff) sooner or later with a Memorial Tournament...only we'd not have been able to title it "The Zapper Tournament" without the above-mentioned background.

That is really cool, David...
I knew Jeff well ( he was my uncle), he taught me most of what I know about the game and I know he'd be very happy and humbled that you all here at Net-Chess are naming a tournament after him!
I have met quite a few ppl in my games that knew and played Jeff, and their kind words make me feel very good about this site...I dont think he ever stepped on anyone's toes, and he tried to reamin a sarcastic and smart-arse for aslong as he could; even when he got very sick and the pain became almost overwhelming,
I thank all of you for the nice words and making this tournament
I hope I get to play all of you and we also can have some memorable games

Thanks Cliff
It's an honour to be marking Jeff's memory in this way and I am sure he's watching us get zapped as I write.
Your always welcome to pass comment Jeff and check on our less than nimble efforts to play this game.
To your memory and full life - thanks.

I had managed to block out the memories of those days. Maybe I should make some games from this tournament randomly disappear, just to be more authentic. When, after a few days or more, the system would be back up and running, there would invariably be several active games that failed to reappear

Assuming that you mean for next years event, not the next round in this years, it's an interesting idea. But putting together a format to it to run smoothly would seem to be to be a nightmare! It took a fair bit for this tournament to actually get started.
Having said that, the idea is still intriguing. I still have a year to come up with some crazy idea, so who knows?
On the other hand, if you did mean Round Two of this tournament, a resounding "ARGH!"
Let's veto that idea for this year's Zapper, okay?

I wish to post this announcement to all of my worthy opponents [Cliff, Redketchuplover, Iamachessstudent, Nhat] that I'm playing in Section B of this Fantastic Tourney, in the memory of Jeff ..... to explain the Limitations of my Ancient PC
Please pardon My No Response to of any of your commentary/comments on our game boards,if there has been any. Please understand that my PC's 800X600 screen limitations will only allow me to see just so much.
As a matter of fact, even if I were able to see much more with a 1056X800 resolution, my sole focus is usually upon the diagonals/limitations of my pieces and those of my opponents.
Now ........ about this middlegame which the Grunfeld Defense has started ..... Hhmmmmm....???

First, I have to humbly beg everyone's forgiveness for not posting an update on Friday. Thanks to the link that Greg provided, I didn't really think it was needed. And that worked out well, since I've been a bit under the weather lately. Thanks, Greg!
For those who haven't checked recently, a brief recap:
Series A - Ramawolf and Davidswhite are tied for first with 2 points each;
Series B - Cliff is first with 1.5 points and Iamachessstudent is second with .5 points;
Series C - Jpettit is first with 4 points and Jvanmechelen is second with 3 points;
Series D - Jpost is first with 3 points and Martijn is second with 1 point.
Last week I selected two games tied for the Game of the Week!
And, They're both from Series C. Both were very fast 'knockouts' and with all due appologies, Greg is the unlucky loser in both!

Another "quickie", also from Series C , worthy of note is:

(By the way, I'm more or less selecting these games for their brevity, rather than anything else.)
And, the posts from Abiodun and Joshua made me feel really good! I'm enjoying the Zapper immeasurably, and it makes me really happy that everyone else seems to be also! This is a Great tribute to Greg I feel! I'm sure that somewhere he feels quite happy!
All for now,
Cliff.
Thanks everyone

Last week I selected two games tied for the Game of the Week!
And, They're both from Series C. Both were very fast 'knockouts' and with all due appologies, Greg is the unlucky loser in both!

Of course he meant Jeff rather than Greg but, considering all the work he's managed so well on this, and the fact that he's lately been under the weather,it's amazing to me that he's been able to carry on running this tourney at the level of competence which he's maintained throughout.
