Thanks for the update on sumdeus' progress.

It's always reassuring to know that God's in his heaven
and all's right with the world.

Please keep us regularly informed of developments since,
inexplicably, the international chess media has been remiss
in doing so.

I'm very grateful too thanks to your terrific job as God's press officer to keep us informed of his progress. Perhaps you should edit a daily report concerning his state of health, what's his favorite food etc. Please tell us if there's anything he needs. David and I would be very appreciative.

gentlemen,

people who call themselves "sumdeus" are probably not the most humble people around, and i don't want to spend the evening with them either, but :

it looks to me that mr Beezaman is just a great fan if this sumdeus, and for all i know : i don't see anybody getting hurt from that. (i've read postings that were a lot more annoying on this forum).

so I was a bit supprised that 2 of the most 'divine' players on this site would resort to a sarcastic response. but maybe you're human after all, and have your own human feelings ?

i was also surprised that this sarcasm was allowed ; i've known it to be treated different. but then again : some people are more equal than others....

I'm sure you're right...that Beezeman's admiration for sumdeus prompted
his post. His enthusiasm,no doubt, misguided him into thinking that this
forum was an appropriate venue to celebrate sumdeus' progress thus far.
He meant nobody any harm but, nonetheless, both muabdib's and my
sensibilities were offended and we overreacted...with sarcasm.
I'm equally sure that you're mistaken in believing that anything that
Hans or I said violated forum propriety and required special dispensation
from Greg to avoid being excised.

Maybe we should just let the moves do the bragging next time, eh Beez?

Post by beezaman » Wed Dec 29, 2004 1:53 pm

i doesnt matter wat u think. i know hes doing well and prolly gonna win so u guys are just jealous of his ability. as for me telling you about it i feel like expressing my thoughs an this is a "general forum" and if you dont like a topic dont read it or post crude remarks targeting a 16 yr old fan of the defending site champ. Thanx for your input but i dont care, sincerely Steven :!:

I too am somewhat put off by this self-aggrandizing handle, "sumdeus."

However, it is worth pointing out that this handle is not exactly blasphemous. It does not say "Dominus Deus sum," (I am the Lord God), only "Deus sum" (I am A god). The latter blasphemes only against the Hellenistic religion, which is longer practiced.

I am sure, however, that the gods will eventually take a terrible revenge.

handles

Post by geebs » Sat Jan 15, 2005 12:03 pm

Really,

Why all the fuss? After all there are far worse handles being used. How about "somporn"?

I suppose it is all a matter of personal preferrence and some tolerance on everyones part, but it does beg the question "Can a handle be changed"?

I am certain that most players would be willing to change their handle if they discovered it was offensive to others, but I am just not sure if can be easily done (I am no computer expert).

It is Possible

Post by echamberlain » Sat Jan 15, 2005 6:59 pm

It is possible for a correspondence Chess site to allow players to change their handles. A paid site on which I play will be happy to let you change your handle as often as you like.

I really do not understand why people are offended by this handle. My thought was that it was an attempt at selfdepreciating humor. For the record, I am an Evangelical Christian of the sort who helped re-elect the US President. I also tend to hold opinions strongly - and that's a charitable way to put it. I just don't go around looking for things at which to be offended.

Thanks for the reply. You and I see eye to eye on more than this issue I see.
