FAQ - Ratings, Time Outs, etc.

My opponent timed out, why didn't I receive credit for a win?
Due to the number of people who start games, make a few moves, then never come back, games where fewer than 10 moves are made are not rated as wins for the winning player. The player who times out is always scored a loss though.

What is the Rating Floor?

Your rating floor is your highest rating -200 points, rounded down to the nearest hundred. Your rating can never go below that point unless you request your floor be removed or lowered.

Ratings on this site

Provisional ratings are based on your performance against the average of the ratings of all of the oponents you've played. So it's pretty typical for your rating to go down if you've won every game but are playing players rated 400 points below your current rating. This effect goes away once you get a mix of wins and losses and have several games under your belt.

The ratings here for active players are inflated over USCF or FIDE ratings. That's mostly because this is a free site and we get a lot of people who sign up for games and never play them.

More About Ratings....

How is a Provisional Rating calculated?

Until you have 20 games completed, your rating will be calculated as a provisional rating which is very different from how an established rating is calculated.

For provisional ratings, it doesn't matter who you beat, but only who you've played and how many games you've won. For example, if you beat a 400 player and loose to a 3000 player, you'd have the same rating as if you lost to a 400 and beat a 3000.

It's really best to just ignore your rating, especially when you've only got a few games under your belt. It's going to jump around a lot until you get several games rated and a mix of wins and losses.

How can I update my Interface on Net Chess?

Q. How can I update my Interface on Net Chess?

A. When viewing your profile, select "Edit your profile" all the way at the bottom. There you can select from three different interfaces, generally standard and enhanced are the only two that are useful.

Adding additional time to your opponent's clock

Post by hamot » Sat Nov 10, 2012 9:59 pm

How can I add time to my opponent's clock when they take a vacation or are otherwise temporarily away from Net-Chess.com?

You can use this URL to add time for your opponents in any of your games:
http://www.net-chess.com/addtime.cgi

Make sure you're logged on to the right URL. If you access the site as http://www.slowchess.com, or don't have the www in front of net-chess.com you'll need to modify the URL above to match whatever you use, or log in to http://www.net-chess.com.
