1. Don't help your foe improve their position.
2. Learn all the mating patterns...2a Learn opening traps and zaps...2b Learn about drawing games
3. Observe entire board
4. Think carefully.
5. Move...5a Only moves should be made instantly!

Those are all good Ketchup, but Id like to add:

Play the opponent NOT the rating!

With each of your opponent's move ASK YOURSELF, what are any threats, and how do I defend against threat.

Stay true to yourself, play your best openings, regardless of the opponent.

TAKE YOUR TIME! We have plenty of it on this site!

NEVER play the first "Good" move you see; step back, breathe and examine the board in more detail! Look for other alternatives or more in depth to the move you want to play.

This isn't all-inclusive by far, but they have always helped me!
