Think 'GameKnot' chess site...
A well written site with a tremendous of amount of 'extras' worth the price.

I belong to chess.com and GameKnot, both of which have great unique features, however net-chess has become my favourite mainly because I like the way the tournaments are organised and they always start quick. Although I play quickly I do like the slow time controls as I don't feel rushed and can happily delay my games if required. To put a price on this site...... $10 ~ $15 per year.

I would happily pay $30 per year to belong to net-chess. :D If there were a nominal fee it would deter these people who start games and disappear from joining. It may also stop the people with a percemtage of forfeits from joining. Well, hopefully it would. $30 a year comes down to around $.57 a week or $.08 a day. Surely we can all afford that.

chess.com has a lot of good stuff. I played a little, there, for a while, and was willing to pay $7.99 a month at a time, for 2 or 3 months, in order
to look at their instruction videos. Then I discovered I could get all I wanted for free on youtube. I gave it up because the people there are mostly very stupid and adolescent, and it is a glorified social network, as well. Batgirl's Blog is very good.

I have just discovered what I think is the best site of all, in terms of the quality of instructional materials: chess24.com
Any of you who don't know about it should have a look. Their main man, GM Jan Gustafsson is very entertaining as well as a very interesting teacher. It costs $9.99/mo. in order to be able to watch their instructional videos, the which come with an e-book version as well ~ very valuable.

"Slow" games on chess.com, but on chess24 the longest games available are 60 min. + 30sec.

All in all, for longer time-control games such as we play here, I like this site the best. We have good, serious players here. Even in slow games, the chess.com people
were not as serious, tended to play too fast, resulting in lower-quality games.

I have not made a donation here, yet, but I intend to, as soon as I am back in the US. I should think that the privilege of being able to play here is well worth $5/mo. given that there are no fringe benefits. I would have no problem with it being mandatory.

And as you will probably be reading this, Greg, good job, and thanks.
