No as David points out, that wouldn't be much of a puzzle, the move sequence is 11 moves until it is completely clear that black is lost position, like i said it is a tough one and i will let it stand for a little while longer before i give the moves.

After 7hrs of analysis Fritz still scored the position in favor of black.

aye chessbase light had the same conclusion but then again it isn;t as good as fritz or ran anywhere near as long.

I think this answer will be open to debate anyway if it is 11 moves long, unless all the moves are pretty much forced.

Ok guys here goes:

1.Nf6+ Kg7 (Kg6?? Bh5+ ot Bc2+ wins easily) 2.Nh5+ Kg6 3.Bc2+! Kxh5
4.d8Q!!! Nf7+ 5.Ke6! Nxd8 6.Kf5 (threaten Bd1 with mate) e2 7.Be4! e1N! 8.Bd5! (renews the threat of mate with Bc4 to e2) c2! 9.Bc4 c1N 10.Bb5 Nc7 11.Ba4!!

Now maybe black can prolong the loss a bit better than with Nc7, but at any rate here black is completely lost It is my favorite puzzle of all times and quite possible the hardest too. I hope you had fun with this one.

Wow, that was pretty cool. I just punched it in to Shredder on one computer and Shredder UCI on another a couple hours ago. I'll let it run until morning, but I doubt it will find the solution.

Jonas, absolutely brilliant and so far beyond me that it's staggering!!!Trapping the black king on the h-file by sacrificing material was probably
the only continuation I didn't consider and yet it's such a thing of beauty
as it unfolds.

Did this occur in an actual game or was it conceived in a chess puzzle

Whats the website where you can punch in a position plus who's turn it is that lists mates out to 20 odd moves??

Would that find this one?

Chessbase stops at Mates in 8, or at least i havn't seen anything higher

I doubt there is a website that can handle 5+ pieces, what you are referring to is probably an endgame database that is hooked up to some of these endgame bases (tablebase?).

I also doubt that any chess program will find the solution as they are stupid

David nice to see you liked the position as much as i did, i had the same reaction as you when i saw it the first time

As for your question, well maybe it is maybe it ain't

PS: if anyone has a chess program running on this position i would like to hear what it comes up with.

I let Shredder 9 analyze it for 28hrs and it found nothing interesting.
