I was playing black in this game. I managed to win a free knight from this position, but litterally woke up in my sleep realizing a better move was available. That's twice I've found better moves while asleep!

I must be really tired, searching for a best move for White :(
After some redicilus moves such as 1.Ne4 Rc1+ 2.Kg2 Nxd6 I just figured out that this just leads to a mate in four for black and nothing for white to gain in anyway.

Now that woke me up :?
the answer to your puzzle is:
1... Rc1+ 2.Qd1 Rxd1+ 3.Nf1 Rxf1+ 4.Kxf1 Qh1++

Why does white have to use the queen? they could just as easy have used the knight and saved losing the queen.

Queen or no queen, it doesn't matter. The end result is the same. The queen move only makes the game one move longer.
