On (a)... how about Bxf7, followed by Ne5 double check (assuming king takes the bishop), nxg6. But this only gains a pawn and knight for a bishop.

Hello steve,

White can indeed do much more then gain a pawn and a knight for a bishop. Bxf7 Kxf7 is just the appetizer.

For a)

1.Bxf7 Kxf7 2.Qc4+ wins as follows...
2...Be6 3. Ng5+
then
3...Ke7 4.Rf7+ Bxf7 5. Qxf7#
or
3...Kg8 4.Nxe6 (threat:5.Ng5+ Kh8 6.Nf7+) Qe7 Nxc7+ wins an exchange (This could be improved upon...)

2...d5 3.Nxd5
then
3...Kf8 4.Ne5+ Kg8 5.Nf6+ Kh8 6.Qg8+ Rxg8 7.Nf7# (I like this one!)
or
3...Be6 4.Ng5+ Kg8 5.Nxe6 Qd6 [5...Rxe6 6.Nxc7 Bxc7 7.Qxe6+] 6.Nexc7 Bxc7 7. Nxc7+ wins a rook.
or
3...Re6 4.Ng5+ wins an exchange

If black doesn't play 1. Kxf7 he will lose an exchange immediately

You have thought it well through sirthirsday.
2.Qc4+ is indeed the move to go. After that, black is lost.

An interresting sideline you missed
1.Bxf7 Kxf7 2.Qc4+ Ke7, (moving away from f-file)
though this looses the queen after a couple of moves.
3.Ng5 Kd7 4.Rf7+ Qe7 (4... Re7?, white mates in 8 --> 5.Qe6+ etc.)
5.Rxe7
and gone is blacks queen.

As for the best line:
1.Bxf7 Kxf7 2.Qc4+ d5 3.Nxd5 Kg8! 4.Nxc7+ Be6 5.Nxe6 Qc8
