White can't do 2) exd4 because then black replies with 2) ... Be7, trapping the white queen.

This defends e6 as far as I can see

How would you play for white in 34b?

You mean if it was white's turn instead of black's? I'd play 1) Rxe6

I can't see any moves what give white a clear advantage, although both 1) Rc1 and 1) Be7 don't look too bad
...
