33b: 1...Nxe5 (if Qxe5, Nh3+ wins the queen) 2.Bxg5 Rxg5 after a queen move, avoid pawn fork on f4

Hello Greg,

You are right that white cannot recapture the knight with Qxe5.

How would you continue if white played the fork f4 immediatly?
1... Nxe5 2.f4 (View Board)

2.f4? Bc5+!! wins the exchange and a pawn:

3.Rf2! (else the queen is lost) Bxf2 4.Kxf2 (Qxf2? Ng4) Nxd3 5.Qxd3 (Nxd3?? Ne4) Ne4+

3.Be3 Bxe3+ 4.Qxe3 Ng4 (threatening 5...Rh1+! 6.Kxh1 Qh5+ 7.Kg1 Qh2#) 5.Qh3

3.d4 Ne4 4.Qe3 Ng4 (see 3.Be3 above)

3.Qe3 Bxe3

3.Qf2 Bxf2

You've got that written out right Mike :D

With the 3.Be3 line I assume you meant Qg3? Qh3 is too obvious giving the queen away.

Your lines show clearly that black can manouvre the knights and bishop
to force white to choose between the loss of a minor piece or queen.

I overlooked Qg3's defense of h2. In light of that, 3...Ngf3+ is a better continuation since 5.Qg3 regains a knight in the 3.Be3 line.

1...Nxe5 2.f4 Bc5 3.Be3 Ngf3 4.Rxf3 Nxf3 5.Qxf3 Bxe3 6.Qxe3 Rxb2

How about this line:

3... Nh3 (giving away the knight, Black can still grab the bisshop)
4.gxh3 Qg6! (Activating the piece, pinning the queen with favourable positional exchange quality, see end)
5.Kg2 Bxe3 (seemingly giving away a minor piece, but ...)

6.fxe5?? Rxb2+!! And the king can be chased away.
6.Rb1 Bxf4! 7.Rxf4 Rg4!

If white accepts the queen exchange, then black plays Bxe3+ Nxg6 resulting in active pieces.

I'll give 33a a wild stab in the dark...

1...Nb4 forces the queen away from defence of the pawn on g3 (2.Qe3?? allows Nc2 with the fork). This allows 2...Bxg3 followed by 3...Qxh4 forcing mate on h2 (or at least a lot of material for the prevention of that threat.

Am I right, or have I missed the bigger picture?

Nb4 and Bxg3 is the correct line :D

1... Nb4 2.Qd2 Bxg3 3.Qg5! Bxh4! followed by a queen exchange
