I am assuming the aim of the second game for white to move is to get to an equal position.
The only decent move for white is 1.Nxc6 Nxd2 2.Nxe7+ (not Bxb6 as 2...bxc6 3.Kxd2 axb6 doesnt get white anywhere) Kh8 3.Bxb6

You've got that right Keith.
White's Knight on d4 is thrice attacked and twice defended.
(Black just had played Nf6xp)
Simply moving the queen out of harms way, or capturing the knight does not do.

For those interrested:
white's last move in 30a was probably to capture blacks bishop.
- Except for the pin on the pawn, what does also bins that move?
- And which move was better for white?

You are right Mike. View Board
Bd5 now covers also e5. Now Black has to avoid white's Nh5 or loose the queen. Either Nh4 (Nxh4 Qxh4) or Qf6 are good responses to this.
Though white has an overloaded piece now.
After Bxb7 Rab8 Bxa6, black will use this weakness by playing exd4.
The end result will be positional advantage for white with one pawn up.
