Puzzle 21, white to play

Post by tellymetwise » Sat Jul 31, 2004 6:20 am

After the Scandinavian Defence opening
with 3... Qe5+, 'The Patzer Variation'
black ended up in this position
having just played Nd5.

White to play, and win a pawn.

1. Nxd5.

if ...cxd5, Bxd5 wins a pawn as exd5?? loses to Qxe7#

if ...Bxf3, Nxc7+ wins.

I won't comment to deep on your reply yet, but I can say this:

Try to think of ALL your given moves as weaknesses and strengths, for both sides. example as given by you: Knight on d5 provides weakness for black due to ... etc.

Tip:
1. View blacks Bxf3 in the same light as in puzzle 19 after 1.Nxd5
2. ..

I didn't notice Bxg5. Let me start again.

1.g4 Bg6 2. Nxd5 wins a pawn as follows:

...cxd5 3. Bxd5 (exd5 loses to Qxe7#) wins the pawn.
...Bxg5 3. Nxg5 cxd5 Bxd5 wins the pawn.

if after 1.g4 the move 2.Nxd5 is dangerous for black, then I hope you don't mind black playing 1... Nxc3 instead of almost passively waiting for white's winning move 2.Nxd5.
(1.g4? Nxc3! 2.bxc3)

The same as with 1.Nxd5, black just can't leave the strong Knight there and will recapture with 1... cxd5.
(1.Nxd5? cxd5!)
