If 1...e5 then 2.dxe5 Qxd3 3.exf6+ Kf8 4.Qxb6. White wins a pawn knight and bishop for a rook. And gets a pawn very close to promoting.

That's correct Greg.

Do you also know the continuation where e5 is a good move?

answer: black should start with a4, after that e5 will become a viable move

That seems to be worse: 1... a4 2.Bc2, if 2...e5 3.exe5 and black looses a piece.

i'd call it a draw after that especially with the continuation

4.dxe5 Qxd3 5.exf6+ Kf7(or Kf8, Kg8) 5.Bb3

1... a4 2.Bc2 Nxc4 3.Bxa4 e5

4.dxe5 Qxd3 5.exf6+ Kf7 6.Bb3 (Keith)
4.dxe5 Qxd3 5.exf6+ Kf8 6.Bb3 Rxe1 7.Qxe1 Rd7 8.Bb4 Kf7 looks better.

Though 3... Nd6 4.Bc2 Ne4 is better for black. White might try 2.Ba5 to avoid this line altogether.

I asked for the e5 move because this game ended with the line as given by Greg.
1... e5 etc.
And that's the way chess works. You see a good move (and position), and you prepare for it.
