Different puzzle

Post by muabdib » Fri Apr 16, 2004 3:52 am

This puzzle is quite different. I worked it out myself and hopefully there's only one solution. No engine available to solve it. Best of luck to everybody.

White takes back his last move and mates instead in one!

I would take back the h7g8 and play h7g8, Not?

It took me several hours to work this puzzle out and you got it within a few minutes - our even seconds? you're right, but just give me the right move:

Instead 1.????
White plays 1.????

White plays 1. hxg7=N mat !!

I saw that if you played Bh7g8 you might check with the Knight on g8.

From there it was a small step to notice that the Bishop was a promoted pawn, giving me the required Knight to mate on g8.

Moves are as raymond already stated.

Take back: hxg8B (most probably capturing a Bishop)
To play: hxg8N
N is a more common abbriviation for Knight, that's why I stated "Not" with a capital N, so Muabdib, knowing the correct answer, might discern this.

Yes of course. You're both right. Congrats. So next time I'll have to find something much more difficult for both of you:-)

btw, Muabdib,

I surely think this problem is worth showing others I know.
No doubt that is worth more then spending a minute creating a different problem I "just" solve here on SlowChess.
