Nothing particulary wrong with Nxf7 either as the resulting moves can lead to pawn swpas too leaving white ahead still

Don't see why the Bxe5+ adds anything. Doesn't 1.Qh8 has same result?
(1..Kxh8 or ..Kh6 then Nxf7, 1...Kg6 then Nxf7 followed by Qxh7) Have I missed something?

If 1.Qh8+ Kg6 2. Nxf7 Qd1+ followed by many, many more checks. I believe the idea was to simplify the game to avoid any potential of perpetual check.

Oops.missed that -- the bxe5 forces the black Q onto e5 and so forces the Kxh8 because of the pin. .....& I wonder why I lose games...
