Here's my guess:
No. White would follow with:
N-f8
if black moves the queen, white responds with:
Ng7+ hxg7
Rh4 mate
if black captures the knight then:
... Rxf8
Re7 Qd8 (to protect the back rank)
Qf7 Rg8 (preventing Qxg7 mate)
Re8 Rxe8
Rxe8+ Qxe8
Qxe8 mate.
of course I could be missing something. As a matter of fact, I usually miss something

"Black happily plays Rxf8, whitlow"
And once again, I manage to lose a game I wasn't even playing in.....
Oh well.....back to the drawing board....

You've seen why your plan doesn't work?

Yes
White can reply in many ways, but the best two are probably 2. Nf8 or 2. Nc5. 2.Nf8 was explained above, so here is what happens with 2. Nc5
2. Nc5, but after 2... Rxe4
if 3.Rxe4 then 3...Rc1++
if 3.Nxd7 then 3...Rxe1++
so the only alternative is Nxe4. This leaves Black a pawn up, although White is threatening to win black's d-pawn.
Black can now play Rc6 and although cramped and defensive, Black is no longer in a dangerous position.

after 1... Rxc3 2.Nc5 Rxe4 white continues with Qxe4, still treathening with mate.
