In the above position white played 1.exf6

was this correct and wins for white or incorrect and allows back to defend himself

support your opinion with a variation

this puzzle comes from a game played between Vanka and Jansa in a junior tournament in prague in 1957

there are 5 points available in the book for solving this correctly with 4 points going towards the correct analysis

next puzzle next week

good luck

Keith

Interresting position Keith.

answer in invisible ink: (#DEE3E7) Select to view.

=> Begin invisible answer.
it's the best move, though you have to prove that black can't do better.
the direct line is the following:
1.exf6 Qxf4 (Bd6 or Nd6?)
( Nd6, Nxp, NxN, QxN the bishop pins the Knight and wins)
( Bd6, Bxd6, and black is no better off)
( e5? Don't panick Bxe5 and black is finished)
2.Nxe6 Nxe6
(and now white has to trap blacks Knight)
3.Qxe6+ Kb8 4.Ne2!
(Finding this move is the key!)
(and black can't protect his Knight)
4... Qc7 5.Rd7 Qc8 6.Qxf5 gxf6 7.Qxf5
(etc etc)
=> End invisible answer.

-(edited invisible ink color from #EFEFEF to #DEE3E7)

Pretty much spot on you only differ on the fourth move for black but i think it was pretty much irrelvant by then

it did say finding the fourth white move was the key a quite and decisive move

Move 4 is like a tied up end of a tripwire. That's why I exclamated it.

And I like tripwires :twisted:

Below some test to see which color is completely invisible.
=> invisible ink test: tested color: #EFEFEF
=> invisible ink test: tested color: #DEE3E7
=> invisible ink test: tested color: #D1D7DC

Note the fact that the background color alternates for every other reply.

Just a Question.

Why can't black play
Cue Invisibility:
Qg5 for move 4?

Call it puzzle 1b. :twisted: The answer below.

Because of: (Invisible Ink)
=>
Qe5+

5. .. Bd6 6.Rxd6 Ka7 7.Qxa5+ Kb8 8.Rd8+ etc. etc. white wins.
or
5. .. Nd6 6.Qxg5 white wins
or
5. .. King moves, mate in two.
