The fastest mate that I could find at this position was white mating in 10 with:
1. Qc6+, Kb8
2. Bf4+, Bd6
3. Bxd6+, Rxd6
4. Qxd6+, Kb7
5. Qc6+, Kb8
6. Rg1, Qxd2+
7. Kxd2, Nxc4+
8. Ke1, Nd6
9. Rg8+ Nc8
10. Rxc8++
Can it be done any quicker?

I am curious, in this case why would you give up your queen for the rook?6. Rg1, Qxd2+ wouldn;t you want to bring the king back by the king?

How about Bxb6, if Qxb6 then Qxd7+, Kb8 Qc8 checkmate!
Am I correct?

There's a mate in 7, but it's not easy to find at all, as the first move is not forcing. Should I go ahead and post it here, or leave it for others to find (given that I used a computer)?
PS. The computer actually found the mate in 10 before the mate in 7 -- it's that obscure.

The first move is Rg1. From here it quickly gets complicated as black has many responses, most of which lead to shorter mates.
Code: Select all
1.Rg1
1...Bxd2+ 2.Kf1
2...Qxb5 3.cxb5
3...Kb8 4.Rg8+
4...Rd8 5.Rxd8+
5...Kc7 6.Bxb6+
6...axb6 7.Qc8#
6...Kb7 7.Qc6#
5...Kb7 6.Qc6#
5...Nc8 6.Qxc8#
4...Nc8 5.Qxd7 any 6.Rxc8#
4...Kb7/Kc7 5.Qc6#
3...Kb7 4.Qc6+ Kb8 5.Rg8+
5...Rd8 6.Rxd8+ Nc8 7.Rxc8#
5...Nc8 Rxc8#
3...Kc7 4.Qc6+
4...Kb8 5.Rg8+
5...Rd8 6.Rxd8+ Nc8 7.Rxc8#
5...Nc8 Rxc8#
4...Kc8 5.Rg8+ Ke7 6.Qe6#
3...Bb4 4.Rg8+
4...Kb7/Kc7 Qc6#
4...Bf8 5.Rxf8 any 6.Qc6#
3...Na8/Na4/Nc4/Kd8/d4/g5/Be1/Bxe3/Bc1/Bc3/Ba5 4.Rg8+ any 5.Qc6#
2...Na8/Na4/Nxc4 3.Qxd7+ Kb8 4.Qc8#
2...Qa3/Qb4 3.Rg8+
3...Kb7/Kc7 4.Qc6#
3...Qf8 4.Rxf8 any 5.Qc6#
2...Bb4 3.Rg8+
3...Kb7/Kc7 4.Qc6#
3...Bf8 4.Rxf8 any 5.Qc6#
and so on, and that's just for 1...Bxd2+ (although I imagine the lines are similar without that.)
