Lichess.org has grown into the BEST chess site ever.

I will always love Net-Chess.

But http://lichess.org is amazingly vibrant and totally free. They have a smartphone app for playing games, but do NOT forego using the website as well. It has so many functions and options it even blows away sites like chess.com!

Did I mention it's free as in no money asked? (Donations appreciated, but gives only a badge, no special treatments!) They claim it will always stay that way, and it's free as in open source too, so you can contribute code and other changes if you think of something to improve it further.

I almost never play at Net-Chess any more, though I'm looking forward to the 'ZapperG' Memorial Tournament that I hope will happen as planned in July. (Thanks Cliff!)

And if anyone here wants to play me, I'm "energy" here but I am "NilsR" on Lichess.org, so if you can acquire a 1900 or better rating there, you will be able to challenge me!

My gratitude to Greg for allowing me to play here almost from the start (since April 1999! That's 18 years!!). It has been lots of fun. :)

Seems Lichess is mainly for live chess and variants.

If you only evaluate the smart phone app, you will miss incredibly much, but even there you can play casual games as well as rated, in real time, correspondence as well as unlimited time limits. I suggest you check it out in your browser though, preferably on a laptop or desktop, to see all that is offered.

Net-chess.com is my favourite chess site.

I mostly play correspondence games and I find this site suits me fine.

It's very easy to join or start a new tournament and one unique feature is being able to have any thematic opening you want.

Another feature I like is in the profile/game history which is the best I've found.

A nice friendly (mostly) group of opponents makes me feel right at home here.

So I'm here to stay.

I don't think thematic openings are unique to this site

I know other sites have thematic openings. For example GameKnot and Chess.com have preset thematic openings, which is good and well, but what if you wanted the position after 1.a3 a6 2.b3 b6 3.c3 c6 4.h3 h6 5.g3 g6 6.f3 d6 ? The possibilities are infinite here on net-chess. I'd be pleased to know if any other site offers the same. (The above position could be from the chess variant Chess256 which involves one square pawn moves.)
