Opponent refuses to move

Post by xmate » Tue Jul 12, 2005 4:29 am

I am playing a person who is refusing to move or resign. We had two games, I resigned the first when it was completely obvious that I had no chance. In the second game my opponent has no chance but has stopped playing. They refuse to move or resign. I am more than happy for a person to continue playing even if their situation is hopeless. It is my duty to checkmate them not theirs to resign. But this person is doing nothing. I have noticed that this person has stopped playing on another game which they are likely to also lose. I have sent, what I consider to be reasonably polite, messages (3) to this person who has not bothered to answer and still refuses to move. There is still about 50 days left before the game is forfieted on time. I am very frustrated. Is there anything that can be done?

you can wait 50 days.

I've had to do that several times. Just start a few more games, and you'll quickly forget about it, then one day you'll notice your rating shot up a few points.

wulebgr, I appriciate your comment. You are quite correct. However, ratings are not my motive, with no disrespect to you. This person is just being plain rude and contemptuous of proper etiquette. I think there should be some sort of sanctions applied to people who do this sort of thing. :)

We could compile a list of such players, and organize a group of players who systematically avoid them (although such avoidance might be difficult with the challenge structure as it currently exists).

Post the game ID(s) and I'll remove time from them.

Yes I think a list would be good but as you say the logistics may be hard to work out. Another possibility is forfieture of games and being banned from site for a short time?

Greg thankyou. The game number is g1104635031 from match m1115289393. Thanks

Is that the right game? Your ID isn't one of the players, also, black has resigned.

Looks like this one has sorted itself out, but the non-resigning loser is one of the greatest banes of online chess.

In addition to reducing the remaining time of offenders, how about some kind of sanction, such as 'name and shame' or suspension? I only suggest those as I know you're too nice a guy to entertain any notions of physical retribution.

Greg,

I suspect the match id was right, xmate probably meant g1104635*9*31:

Yes, thankyou energy. The game ID should have been g1104635931, match ID is correct. A typo on my behalf.

not enough moves

what do you do when a player is not moving although they have lost and they are under the 10 move mark for making a game official?
