Playable Openings
What about 1.f3 followed by 2.Kf2
favorite opening.
d4 all the way baby.
I have always been a big fan of the queens gambit (ala kasparov), but recently I have been playing around w/ the blackmar diemer which also opens w/ d4 - both cases seem to perplex new players and both encourage an open game where I usually thrive.
I guess the BDG is unsound (depending on who your playing) and I may not always win w/ it but I do always have fun w/ it. Thoughts?

Why f3 and Kf2?
Is it a kasparov thing?

A few years ago, 1.f3 followed by 2.Kf2, was played in blitz games by an anonymous player on the ICC server, against Grandmasters, and with success! It was rumored then, that the anonymous player was none less than Bobby Fischer. IIRC, GM Nigel Short was convinced that it could only have been Fischer.pumpkin wrote:f3 Kf2??? its a joke right?? it doesn't actually have a name other than stupid does it??? please!! play it against me!!
Well of course D4 is the best opening move:)
Anyone dare to disagree ::holds zapstik threateningly:: huh huh HA didnt think so
But seriously, we all have our little favorites, openings and opening moves...personalities are as diverse ad the opening we choose...yet another nuance that makes Chess such a fun form of Art to participate in

I dont really have a favourite opening as white or even a favourite defence as black for that matter
i like to vary it too keep my opponents guessing after all if you play the same opening in 90% of your games opponents will just attempt to take it down lines which they can win
YOU!!!
I had a weird feeling that somehow you would say something to my reply!
I know what you mean tho, but you take that chance playing any opening or opening move that your opponent will be prepared and try and fry u like a fillet of sole
A little variety never hurts, I agree and all is well that ends well in a game that you can say you tried your best and had a good time playing it!

I find myself gravitating to stuff I learned as a kid, it funny how that works, as a kid I learned the Fried Liver Attack, and won many many games with it. Maybe one day I'll organize a thematic tournament with that opening.
You heard the old saying, "as a twig is bend, so the branch will grow" or is it "sapling is bent, the tree grows" in either case I think we are creatures of habit.
Best Regards Dragondude

The line 1.c3 e5 2.d4 exd4 3. Qxd4?! playing the Scandinavian with one extra tempo has worked very well for me. But, i must admit, I haven´t played that line here at Slowchess yet...
Always looking into new openings myself

Re: What is your favorite Opening as White?
I often play 1.d4, but my favourite is 1.e4
Strange that 1.c4, such a flexible first move gets so few votes so far. I play any of g3, Nf3, d4, c4 but I voted for b4 because it gives challenging games when taken seriously by black and good winning chances when black doesn't respect it. and of course there is less "book" on it for people to refer to. And because I enjoy it - the real reason!
1. d4 is best; 1. c4 a close second.
I consider that 1. d4 is objectively best, one reason being that 1...d5 2. c4 produces a game where it is very difficult for Black to find winning chances -- the same is not true of 1. e4 e5. Black's best winning tries, of course, arise from 1. d4 Nf6, but this presents White with an immediate space advantage after 2. c4.
Perhaps most important is that 1...c5 is an excellent answer to 1. e4, while there is no analogue versus 1. d4.
I am surprised that 1. d4 has gathered a good share of votes but not 1. c4. Many 1. d4 middlegames can be reached from 1. c4, and one big advantage of 1. c4 is that it avoids the Nimzo. The independent replies, 1...c5 and 1...e5, both offer White good winning chances. I think 1. d4 and 1. c4 are roughly equal in value.

Yes, really!
While the Dutch mirrors the Sicilian geometrically, I don't think it's at all analogous in terms of what it achieves, or aims for, positionally. I play the Leningrad Dutch myself, but I think it's fair to say that Black risks much more with the Dutch than he does with the more established systems of the Sicilian.keithstuart wrote:Could you not conisder the Dutch defence a sort of reversed sicilian though??
And of course, the Dutch is not nearly as well regarded as the Sicilian, so I think my point that 1. e4 c5 has no analogue after 1.d4 is true. The closest in terms of positional spirit would be the Modern Benoni or the Benko Gambit, both of which have fallen on hard times.
When black answers the English 1.c4 with 1....e5, you het a reversed Sicilian. The Dutch resembles a reversed Bird's opening.
An acquaintance a few years ago who was good enough for a chess scholarship to college played Bird's throughout high school, but shifted to the English in college (where he faced stronger competition). Now, the first FIDE Master to live in my town in a long time is an accomplished Dutch player.
I favor 1.Nf3 as white: it can lead to the Reti, which gives me good results, several QP openings I'm comfortable in, the English when I feel like it, and if they answer 1....c5, I play 2.e4 with the white side of a Sicilian--something I've learned to enjoy after playing the Sicilian Defense myself more than 25 years! I've pulled people who never play the Sicilian against 1.e4 into the Sicilian Defense this way.

The Benko Gambit is alive and well!
