About chess-teams season three group 1...

Post by cohonas » Sat Apr 09, 2005 12:08 am

TEAM NAME - Ave. Rating - Matches Played - Match Points - SCORE

Damn Yankees 2695 29 34.5 4.5-1.5
Canadian Gambits 2594.8 28 32.5 3.5-2.5
Russia International 2556 28.5 49.5 6-0
Team Europe 2541.2 27 9 0-5
Dream Team 2535.2 29.5 27.5 3-3
Team Norway 2500.6 27.5 29 3-3
UK Royals 2492.4 28 15 0-5

And here sorted according to performance:

Russia International 2556 28.5 49.5 6-0
Damn Yankees 2695 29 34.5 4.5-1.5
Canadian Gambits 2594.8 28 32.5 3.5-2.5
Team Norway 2500.6 27.5 29 3-3
--------------------------------------------------
Dream Team 2535.2 29.5 27.5 3-3
UK Royals 2492.4 28 15 0-5
Team Europe 2541.2 27 9 0-5

Now as far as i can gather the 4 teams that score the best moves on to the semifinals? well the semifinal
line-up is:

Russia International v Dream Team

and:

Damn Yankees v Canadian Gambits

Now is there something that i have overlooked or does it seem like there have been a mixup? i mean
why does Dream Team move on to the semi's and not Team Norway, what am i missing here?

BTW congrats to Russia International on a fantastic performance!

Tiebreakers

Post by mluka » Tue Apr 12, 2005 2:00 pm

"The standings in each division or group will be decided by team score. In the event of a tie, the head to head will be the tiebreaker; if they drew, then the second tiebreaker will be total Match points. In the event that even these are tied, the team with the lower (preseason) average rating will receive the higher place."
This excerpt is from the League Rules under the heading "Tournament Structure." Team Norway and Dream Team had the same team score (3-3), so the tie was broken by their head-to-head score, a 5.5-4.5 victory for Dream Team in round 4.

Ok i see, i just thought the team with the most match points would go on to the next round in case of a tie, atleast that seemed logical to me ;)

BTW thank's for your work and effort running this Mr. Luka it has been really fun participating.

Let me just point out that had it been the other way around i would have brought this point up as well.

Can i ask what reasoning lies behind putting head to head score before match points when deciding who goes through in case of a score tie?

I would think it was more logical (no matter who was to go through and to be honest i could use the break from team play) to look at the match points first before the head to head score? i mean if not, then that will result in teams with an overall better score being left behind based on the head to head score only.

Any thoughts on this guys?

The decision had originally been made by some combination of hamot, rmorton, and me. My reasoning, at least, was that a decision on which of two teams should proceed boils down to which team fared better in head-to-head competition. That being said, I understand your viewpoint as well...the important thing was to be consistent and not have to make up rules as the need arose - choose an arbitrary path and stay the course when no clear choice stood out.
It's not as prominent, but there is another somewhat arbitrary rule in place (while they're on the table...): if two players on the same team have the same rating when ratings are frozen (to determine board order for a new round), the player with more completed games plays on the higher board.
Obviously I wouldn't want to effect a rule change in midseason, but any discussion is welcome. Most of the rules and settings that are in place now resulted from a vote by players prior to the first season.
