Yes, assuming all is well with the site you should get notified wether e-mail notification is on or not.

is there anyway to opt out of email notification? for anything, new matches or games or such.

Not really. You could change your e-mail address to an invalid e-mail, or use filters in your mail program to automatically file or delete them.
