board adjustments

Post by echamberlain » Fri Nov 26, 2004 1:48 am

I am very confused. It seems to me that I have found several screens on which I may adjust various aspects of my playing screen. Every time I try, I make the playing screen less pleasing to me. In particular, at the moment my board has no squares. I would like the squares white and dark green or perhaps brown. I would like the board larger than default but small enough to fit on a 15 inch screen in high resolution. I would like the normal set.

Can anyone help me? I am almost to the point of giving up on the site.

I believe that you forgot to set the squares to a color value?

I've set mine to a wood scheme:
border-color: 9A8249
dark-squares: 9A9449
light-squares: EDD39E

It might be that you have to add a # in front of the color, ex: #EDD39E

good luck

for those of you who want a wood color scheme, I'll post the RGB color codes of this woodcolors webpage here later on.

With the above link, search for the picture with the color you want and search the corresponding file name below.
Note that due to the graininess of wood, the colors might be looking somewhat different.
The best combination is of coarse combining two different wood kinds.

board adjustments

Post by echamberlain » Fri Nov 26, 2004 12:45 pm

Thank you tellywise. I have grasped the general idea of how to control square colors and set up a color scheme I can live with. However, I have two more questions.

1. Does anyone know the color code for the forest green of a normal vinyl chessboard? I'd really like to have that but all I have been able to create is turqoise or lime.

2. I can't seem to change the default chess set. I click on "Normal" and then "save" but the system still defaults to set 2.

As for the piece sets, that doesn't work yet. You can only chance it at the board, without saving it.

For Forest Green if you know an example, I might look up what the colors are in hexcode.

If you want to lookup the colors yourself with window programs you can do the following:
-Search for a picture you want the color from.
-copy and paste it into "paint"
-use the color picker to pick the color and lookup what the RGB codes are.
-open calculator and for every element of the RGB (Red, Green and Blue)
-enter it in calculator, set it to Hex and note it down on paper, until you've got 6 alphanumeric digits. 2 for red, 2 for green and 2 for blue. Don't forget to set the calculator back to decimal before entering the next RGB value.

copying colors

I don't know how to access "paint". If it is part of Office, I have it but may not have it installed. If it is part of Windows XP, I may not have gotten that part with my computer. I do not have a CD of Windows. I did get a restore disk, but I am pretty sure all I can do with it is restore the computer to the way it was when I brought it home.

I do know how to capture a picture of the green I want. Is there a way I could get that pic to you?

there is a forestgreen in the Netscape colorpallete, which has the hexcode: 228b22, you might want to check that out first.

Else you could post the link to the picture with the green here.
Just make sure I know which green it is you want.

Or else, see below

I will try this forest green. I will post further if I want to ask for another color, or when I have more questions about something else.

You can normally find Paint under the "Accessories" on your start menu, it's almost always installed. If you just want to browse which colors are available then start Paint and double click on any one of the colors in the lower left corner, that should pop up a window with a few colors already defined in it, click "Define Custom Color" and you'll get a color picker which will allow you to drag your moust through all of the colors your computer can display.

The enhanced board layout is still under development so not everything works yet. You can't save the set you like, and you can't use one of the graphical boards. I also plan to make the process of customizing the board much less painful.

Thank you for getting back to me about paint and about the features not working yet. I think you have an amazing site for the price, and I thank you. I also think that you could improve the site faster if you charged for use and thereby generated some revenue. "A laborer is worthy of his pay." (St. Paul) You would also have to give price breaks to people who do significant work on the site.
