Are you ready for some chess?

Let's get things jumping around here. So what is going on. Net-Chess 2004 is going to start. Looks like I'll be playing a match against a computer. Hamot has something going ... now how about some major match play? That's right, another annual tourny ... maybe.

Event: Bret's Cup I
Start Date: Jan 1, 2005
Players: I'll take the top 16 rated players who join ... active players.
I will not be playing, I'm the TD. I will select the players who are interested by their rating on Dec 15, 2004.

Round 1

Four Groups of 4 players @ 2 game with each opponent. Two people from each group moves on. Tie breaks will be the head to head score, if still tied, the top seed moves on. Time control for this round is 20d+1d

Round 2

You will be paired in match play. 4 games at 30d+1d. Tie breaks will be 2 games at 10d+1d til there is a winner.

Round 3

More match play! This time a 6 game match at 30d+2d. Tie breaks will be 2 games at 15d+1d til there is a winner.

Round 4

The last two will play a 8 game match at 30d+2d time control. Tie breaks will be 2 games at 15d+1d til there is a winner.

Money Round

What? This is the round where the winner can take his $100 and quit. Or choose to play me in a 10 game match at 30d+2d (15d+1d tie breaks) for double or nothing!

=================

Can I get 16 takers?

it sounds like a fun thing, so Im game in any case!!

Thanks!

I've had some questions emailed to me ... so let me clear up some things.

There is NO entry fee, but there is a prize of $100 US dollars. That winner can elect to play a match with me and win $200 US dollars or lose the $100. Or he can just take his $100 and quit.

If you do not live in the US, you will need a paypal account to accept the prize money, that is the only way I know how to pay ... any other ideas?

If you are interested in joining, you can contact me through the slowchess.com home page or reply here. I will select and seed, those who I believe are the top 16 players who have asked to join. Most of that selection will be based on the rating here at slowchess .. or net-chess .... what ever the name is now?

Hi Bret, I'd be glad to join your tourney.A January 1st,2005 start date
is probably impractical by a day or two...but that's a tiny matter.

Aren't you concerned that you will probably be giving a hundred bucks to the guy with the best chess program. Doesn't it make the hair on the back of your neck stand up to think you may be giving 200 dollars to some guy who cant explain what winning the exchange means. It's possible, no? Anyone (for $ 50 or so) can purchase a program that can beat a GM.

I think its a gimme now days that if you are not a titled player and you're in the elite of any global chess site---you're using a program.

OK, lets sit back and listen to the righteous indignation of our elite.

Hi

Well, I can truly say I own chess programs and never think about using them! I have a high degree of respect for the game and my opponents, and using a program is so pointless, I mean what are you proving, nothing!
I love the game.art of Chess for itself, not to blow my rating up or make myself look like an IM, FM, GM or any other type of "M". I play fo rthe love of it and to have a good fun chat with my opponents, EVEN KeithStuart :)
Im certainly not hierarchy here, but I have played almost 5 years here and have worked hard on my game and for my rating, regardless if it is calculated good bad or whether anyone likes it or not, I earned it, I got those wins , losses n draws on my own and Im proud of it!!
so let them use their programs, they are only fooling themselves and no one else..I feel bad for them if they do, it must suck not to be able to rely on your own abilities and talents..but thats just me!

by bret
We need at least 4 more to sign up to start this thing. Here is the list as I have it now.

1. angelofthenight - 2989
2. davidswhite - 2952
3. herlocksholmes - 2903
4. ramawolf - 2880
5. munbehend - 2827
6. eraymond - 2790
7. lmac - 2729
8. keithstuart - 2511
9. simbathelion - 2147
10. jjones - 2125
11. mgomdysey - 2124
12. billy - 2048

Pretty strong field! I'm behind simbathelion so I can keep the money!
The start date has been changed to a few days after Jan 1, 2005
If enough players join, I'll start a lower division without a prize fund.

By-The-Way

Does anyone know the handles of strong chessplayers? I do not want to offend anyone, but I've invited some to join that will be in if they join ... It's only because I know who they are. Members like junking, cornstalk, fbraun I know for sure have years of chess behind them. If someone could share a handle with me and who they are I will invite them. A sure thing like this comes before the ratings on this site. I hope this statement is understandable.

mikeh is a very good player who's been playing here pretty much since the site started. Also maubdib (sp?) is another good player.

It's muabdib and he(Hans) is,without any doubt, one of the very strongest

players on this site.

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to withdraw from the tournament. I've got a lot coming offline, so I don't think I'll have time for another tournament. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

I will post the challenges for the group pairings around Jan 4th or 5th. All you will have to do is join it. For the match play I will have to contact the players involved and let them start their match.

http://www.staciesgifts.com/cup.htm

I'm going to keep up with the tournament on the above link. I will have to see how many players enter before I can get the final format for the lower section. I do not know if Greg will link to the page or not.

Posted: Fri Dec 31, 2004 6:22 pm
by gmiller
I don't plan to put a link on the main page for this one because if I put one up for every tourny anyone ran, there'd be way too many. Right now we have hamot's tourny, the Net-Chess tourny, the two chess ladders, and ChessTeams. If we start getting a lot of tournys like this I'll probably put together a separate page for them all.

I'll put together a program which will allow you to get pages like those on the 2004 tourny page automatically for whatever matches you want.

joint me!

Here's a link to an automated score table:
http://www.net-chess.com/bretscup.cgi

Bret, you can include this on your tournament page by using the <IFRAME> HTML tag. E.g.:

Code: Select all

<IFRAME height=200 width=100% src='http://www.net-chess.com/bretscup.cgi'>
</IFRAME>

Thanks Greg.

How does it look? I'm not much of html author, just trying to have a simple look ... which I have with my setting in IE6. However, I can tell from other posts that other browsers are used ... does it look ok in them?

Looks fine in Firefox, but increase the height a little bit and people won't have to scroll to see all of the results.
