Ratings here??!

Post by cornstalk » Fri Aug 06, 2004 7:30 pm

So what is it with the ratings on this site?? I used to play here, and the max rating was perhaps 2400. Now I see many ratings over 2700. What the frig does that mean? :o

Hi Mark,
back from the CL? I had been playing in group 10 board 4. Nice to have you here again. The ratings? A long long story. Players with different handles playing one another pushing their ratings up up and away etc.etc. Nothing greg could do against. So don't worry and make yourself right at home.

Greetings
Hans

is there a percentile breakdown of ratings at this site

Post by peb » Sun Aug 22, 2004 5:17 am

ie a table which says what % of players have rating >N for different N
Being the competitive person that I am I'd be interested in knowing where I ranked - (yes I know it doesn't mean *that* much)

Hi Mark, funny you should ask. No,I mean, funny you should ask that way.
Now I remember what I most missed about you...your sense of humor.

As to the inflated ratings here, through a variety of manipulations a huge
gust of helium got in and skewered things badly.Greg has taken measures
to limit the damage done and ensure against any repetition.

However, a lot of puff seems permanently embedded.
So,as Hans and Jeff advised you, just enjoy yourself and play your usual good chess.Sooner or later(hopefully!)everything ratings-wise will sort
itself out.

Best regards,
David
