Oppenents average rating and game record

Post by ghorn » Fri Apr 09, 2004 10:44 pm

Is there a simple way to determine from the your oppenents average rating and your game record (win/lose/draw percentages) a rating in line with those percentages from the ELO formulas? I tried to work it out for myself and got 2 different results 1815 and 1835. I used my stats in user info for this. I figure tellymetwise may need a small challenge.

If you want to calculate based on those numbers you would get the following:

winchance is: (wins + 0,5 * draws) / #of games

In your case that would be: (377 + 18,5) / 645 = 0,61

A winchance of 61% equals somewhat 55 points difference.
Thus your rating would be: 1779 + 55 points = 1834 points.

There are some "but remembers" in this, but I guess you know what might speak against this way of calculation concerning accuracy.

for reference you can find below a lookup table (if more of you want to check your rating this way.)

Code: Select all

pt diff.	chance
  0 0,50
 20 0,53
 40 0,58
 60 0,62
 80 0,66
100 0,69
120 0,73
140 0,76
160 0,79
180 0,82
200 0,84
300 0,93
400 0,97
600 1,00

Thanks for the fast reply. I realize it is not accurate, but all I needed was a close answer. Seems I had it pretty close with my estimate.

IF I truly cared anymore as to my "strength" or "rating" I would be back in the USCF playing weekened Swiss OTBs or on ICC playing rapid until the wee hours of the morning..UGH to both!

Let shave fun and just play Chess:)

Nothing was said about the ratings on this site. I used my information as an example because this site has the same information I need to work with except it deals with chess. We are trying to work up approximate ratings for our table tennis club. We have two players who are rated ( I did not know they were doing that as I am not a member of USTT.) We have a digest of wins and losses. Since they use the ELO system we were going to try and see how our members fare in the ratings. It is going to be a very loose approximation. I dislike rating systems as most people forget about the rated activity and focus on the rating. However you can not escape ratings, everything is rated these days. :( Including how often you post to this board.

I understood, and I did not mean for it to sound like it was attacking on anyone for any reason at all!
I just wanted everyone to know I love this site and just playing...that is all...
I didnt mean any disrespect...honestly!
I just want to play Chess and have nice chats...and I how everything is rated and it does, at times sucks...but we deal witrh it as unhappily as we can :)

Summarization: I didnt mean anything personal and I hope we all can enjoy this site for many years :)
