Thematic posted: Cochrane Gambit
10 players all play all, twice.
It's a 5 days + 10 days per move game, meaning plenty of time to play.
Though it's a knight for two pawns gambit, played with care, strategy and cunning, white can keep black at the edge of the pit a very long time. Just imagine a fingertips energy extra is enough to push black in. But then again, if white allows black to grab a hold to soon, black will swing around and fling white into the pit like a first rate Judoka black belt.
Just join and take your time playing the game, and enjoy living on the edge of chess.

ladies and laddies playing Cochrane Gambit,
Please note some important strategical points when playing white.
1. Try to gain a 3 pawn center with the d, e and f pawns.
2. Back-up the f-pawn with your castled King's Rook
3. Avoid exchanging Queens!
4.a Try using the a2-g8 line and the (to be opened) f-file for attack
4.b Avoid black playing the blocking d5. This also opens game for black.
5. Make sure that with every move you make, black is slowed down developing both Rooks!
6. if you manage to play f2-f4-f5, with the above rules, changes are better then 50% that white can force game.
7. Luck has nothing to do with it.
8. to be Active or to be Passive, that's not the question, avoid passive play!
9. Avoid exchanging Queens! (yes, again, it's white's most active piece)
10. Enjoy the game
btw: I've posted an example game under puzzles and game comments

That's one of the reasons I posted this Keith. Sorry for the delay.
I like to win, but not by playing a game where others start believing white can only win if black blunders due to the nature of the gambit.
Black should actualy start sweating around move 12 up to move 30/40.
After that, it's every small accumulated well placed (or misplaced) piece which counts.

That's why I started the game with 10d per move. I don't mind if you examine positions tactically and strategically.
The 2 daily newspaper chess puzzles are quite easy as they already outline what must be achieved (and in how many moves).
Here, it's me who has to determine the goals and playability. With 20 games now going, 2 boards a day is enough enjoyment for me. Though the more I enjoy a game, the faster I'll reply, especially when you play what I was expecting you to play.

From the statistical point of view the results are rather interesting:
In OTB: 58% wins for White and 42% wins for Black (without the draws)
ELO-performance of White: 2250, of Black: 2150
In CC and email-chess: 40 % wins for White and the same percentage for Black (without draws). The ELO-performance both for White and Black are very low: under 1700 in both cases. But this gambit has been played 10x as much (%) as in OTB!
In OTB and CC the higher the ELO of White the better the results for White. But it is not played on a high level neither in OTB- nor in CC-games. But it’s very interesting to know that the recent results in OTB as well as in CC are very much in favor for White!
The number of games in OTB: 2.600.00
In CC: 600.000

Actually I suppose John is about to eat his mushroomsoup under clouded skies, surrounded by the roaring of wild beasts- in his beloved wilderness. The Cochrane doesn't mean anything for him!keithstuart wrote:Where is JohnRussell when you need him
He'd give us percentage wins after each move for white and black as he has done in my games with him in the past
If i could afford chess assistant and know how to use it properly i could do the same

If anyone is interrested in the Cochrane Gambit, either just as white or black, you can challange me with the following moves:
2 games, both white and black
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7
2 games, only white: let black time out.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7 Kxf7 5.your-move
2 games, only black: let white time out.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7 Kxf7
time setting: 5 days (or what you like) + 3 to 5 days per move
I'll except 14 games total, or 7 matches as white and black.
Estimated time per game, 3-4 months.
