Why are Sundays so quiet around here?

Post by toverturf » Sun Nov 23, 2003 6:44 pm

I find it strange, but it seems to me fewer people are playing their games, posting comments, etc on Sunday than on any other day...

It seems to be counterintuitive, I would think MORE people would play on Sunday's.

Ah well, just a comment

According to the access logs, it appears most people play from work. Monday morning is always the busiest time.

Now Greg, you don't think that people would be playing GAMES on company time, now DO you?

Actually, that doesn't surprise me. I plead guilty!

Heavy play times

I always seem to have a problem getting on the site or being dumped between 1000 and 1100. Also again at 1630. Are those times with heavy traffic or is the host receiving heavy traffic?

Those are some of the busiest times. I haven't analyzed the logs in quite some time (at least at year), but IIRC: traffic starts building around 7am EST, and continues to build up until about 11am EST, then drops quickly in the afternoon, remaining steady until after midnight.

Being a computer illiterate, I was wondering how much time people actually play chess (or other games etc.) during a typical work day?

I'm thinking there must be some whizes who have a lot of time to goof off after their work is done. Perhaps a little play clears the brain and keeps us invigorated.

Chess at work

Post by toverturf » Mon Nov 24, 2003 10:03 am

There was just a study released (I believe I read it on CNN) that people who have web access and a fairly liberal policy regarding it are actually much more productive workers... so play chess at work!

(And thanks for the stats Greg)

I'm not sure if this is the one you mean, but it is interesting. So is this one. This one is short and sweet, but also supports what you say.

The AP report referred to in the last link you gave, and referenced from the second link you gave is the report I was recalling. It is interesting that back when I was an IT manager I never had a problem with personal web surfing, but the HR department made me issue a policy that forbade it. Turns out I was pretty much right. I'm really glad that I'm not a corporate hack any more... I can surf whenever I want (though it doesn't pay the bills very well).

Do you (greg) have statistics on nationality of net-chess players?
Guess the majority of them are from USA?

And I guess: no one from China.

Please help me with this?

When I use Microsoft Word and I type this: "So: this is"

Then that computer does this: "So : this is"

How can I stop that? I tried to disable every autotype option, grammar, spelling...
