'Mr. Kentucky Chess' found stabbed in Jtown

Post by gmiller » Sun Mar 15, 2015 11:23 pm

I don't cry often, but this was definitely one of those moments when I heard of my friend Stephen Dillard passing. He was possibly the nicest guy in the world. The smile you see in the photo is one he always wore, it really captures his spirit. On top of that, he's done more for chess in this area than the next 100 people have combined. He's run more USCF rated tournaments than anyone in US history, he's been a mentor and encouragement to many new chess players and new tournament directors, myself included. His shoes will simply never be filled.

As a UK national I wasn't familiar with Mr. Kentucky Chess, but found the story a really wasteful and tragic loss of life - I trust that justice will take it's course but this will never bring the gentleman back to life. The significance may not be seen in the world as important but the chess world has lost a real champion in terms of his worth to those who played and will continue to play the game we love.

The May 2015 issue of Chess Life has a 2+ page tribute befitting Mr. Dillard's life.
