I'm very sorry to hear this. All my sympathy to you & your family. Didn't have the chance to play him much, but really enjoyed the games & chats we did have.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the loss of your father.

While I didn't know him for very long, the extensive comments we exchanged in the games we did play allowed me to gain some understanding of him.

Initially we were brought together by Brian(islanderfan) because your dad was exploring a couple of rarely used openings and wanted to try them out against one of the stronger players on this site. Brian,
with whom I'd played, suggested me and I agreed to do it. The one condition Eugene wanted was that we would ,move by move, explain the thinking behind each of our moves. From my standpoint this was both unique and refreshing and from his it was very useful in assisting him in putting the finishing touches to the specific gamebases he'd been steadily complying on these two opening systems.Without doubt we were each very gratified by the results of this match.

In the process I learned a great deal about the physical ramifications which Eugene had been suffering through since his calamitous experience in 1979.The results of that accident would regularly plague him from then on with the need for constant medical repair at one of many Veteran Hospitals for the rest of his life.I can say with certainty that the most recent barrage of attempted repairs were the ones which filled him with dread more than any which had come before. Though lacking in confidence, he reasoned that the only way he'd be able to have any reasonable time left to spend with you,his son, was by hoping against hope that the procedures would miraculously be successful.

My one regret in my dealings with your father ,who was without doubt one of the very strongest players at Net-Chess,was in not making sufficient allowance for the frequent medically induced mood swings which toward the end made our usual amiable exchanges no longer possible.

I repeat that I had the world of respect for your father in chess and in many other areas and deeply regret his passing.

Sincerely,
David White
