Damn good article which gets me to thinking.
I have been a die hard Hockey fan for my entire life (and that's considerable). I even played through Secondary school and a couple years in an 'Adult League'. With that as my 'Resume', I offer my 2 cents... or in today's market, 'Million Dollars'.
I have discovered that I am not phased in the least about the 'Lock out' and that it is NHL business as usual.
I am sure they will lose a couple failing teams and gain back a couple former NHL cities afterwards (isn't that the way it always goes).
I hope that after they dice all that crap up I would love to see a little re-alignment. I think a Canadian Division would strengthen the Canadian fan base and allow expansion. Swap Detroit and Pittsburg. Let Detroit play with the 'big boys' for a few decades... and we shall see if Pittsburg can finally flourish by playing a lot easier schedule for a while.
You might say, 'What's the difference?'
In the Eastern Conference an 'easy' road game would be going TO the NY Islanders or TO Toronto.
In the Western Conference an 'easy' road game would be going TO anywhere except Detroit.
And having been to Detroit and Toronto for games (involving Montreal) they are BOTH TOUGH PLACES TO WIN AT. Even during these 'down' years, you win 2-1 or 3-2 at Toronto. As for the Islanders... well 'islanderfan' is what they got, so you never know.
The NHL has allowed me to enjoy the NFL more (I absolutely loathe giant goober ball at any level of 'competition'). Its not an accident that the NFL has games up to 5 days a week now - the NHL is their only real TV competition (those who watch goober ball, don't have the intellect to enjoy anything else), and as long as they stay away from College Football, the NFL will always be 'king'.
What's the biggest difference between the NBA and the NFL? In the NFL there is a problem with 'contact' really hurting athletes permanently. In the NBA there is a problem with 'contact' actually happening!
Not to mention that 'Your Highness' Michael Jordan probably rushed for more yards for Chicago than Walter Peyton ever did! Pulease! Give me real rules which are enforced. 'Professional Goober Ball'.
So after all that long-winded crap...
I didn't realize that the NHL was not going to start on time - business as usual!

You can look at it a few ways. players are greedy. Yes. Owners are greedy. Yes. Bettman is a complete waste of space, time, air, money, thought, etc. Hell to the yes. But the league is run by the original 6 teams, and what they say goes. I agree Columbus, Phoenix, Florida, Nashville should NOT have teams when Quebec should have one. But then again, Canada shouldn't have let Winnipeg and Quebec leave in the first place.
On the other hand you can say none of the above and be a total Maple Leafs fan like CLiff. Yeah, that guy knows nothing abut hockey eh? Even like those Habs fans... lord don' 8) t get me started....

LOL, I would start with, 'On the other hand...' but you already have more 'hands' than any human I ever heard of.
How about replacing NHL games with the same rosters and schedules except make it 'Broom Hockey' with no pads! I'm there!
