CBS TV's College Bowl,moderated by Robert Earle, actually played a role in my life's course.

In the fall of 1962 I began my senior year in high school.In those days a person was permitted to apply to a maximum of 5 colleges.I had some pretty grandiose notions of where I would be going,none of which took any account of the gross tonnage of disciplinary citations I'd racked up over the years
and would seriously compromise the content of any letter of recommendation I'd be receiving from my school's Headmaster. I knew that my grades,notwithstanding the behavioral issues,would be sufficiently impressive and correctly expected my SAT scores would follow suit so that I was fully confident of being accepted by each of the 4 colleges I'd already decided on:Brown,Cornell,Williams and another which I can't now remember.I needed a 5th
which would serve the function,just in case,of a 'safety' school.
That's where College Bowl,moderated by Robert Earle(as you rightly recalled)interceded in my path. I was addicted to watching the show already and couldn't help but sit up alertly when a small,primarily Liberal Arts college,in Easton,Pennsylvania,Lafayette College,entered TV's College Bowl and went on to retire undefeated after beating the University of California,Berkely,for its 5th consecutive victory.Before that, I was only vaguely aware of Lafayette College but it instantly became my 5th college to apply to even though I considered it my 'safety' school.
After making my 5 applications,I visited each of my choices for the obligatory Admissions interview.All of my interviews went great except for the one at Lafayette,which was an unmitigated disaster since I hadn't bothered to trouble myself learning anything whatsoever about the school and the Admissions Director instantly discerned this fact and,accordingly,chose to treat me almost like a "hostile witness".
Of course,the gods have a perverse sense of humor,and as it turned out the only acceptance I received was from Lafayette College(although I believe that I'm still technically on Cornell's waiting list.It all turned out well,however,since other than a very early suspension for drinking,Lafayette proved to be a most excellent school for this History Major.
Incidentally,before graduating from there in 1967, I and another fraternity brother had developed splendid relations with the Dean's personal secretary and,as a result,were given a few,strictly forbiden,minutes to glance at our personal files.In mine I immediately came upon my high school Headmaster's letter of recommendation. It read(and this is it in its entirety) "David S White attended this school from September,1959 until his graduation in May of 1963. signed Miles K Ren, Headmaster."
