My friend, that would be most welcome indeed.
And to all players I say,
Everyone is welcome to post!
Just keep it clean and leave the nasty stuff elsewhere. I hope these Zapper threads are fun to enjoy from start to finish even after the Tournament is over.
And now for some IMPORTANT news... :P

Here we are folks! The 2012 Zapper Memorial Tournament is officially underway! We arrived here in fabulous Grunky Park. Pity there was no runway at the airport, though. The air was very cold before our parachutes opened.

(Rumour has it that Brian had a boo-boo...)

Ahem!

We arrived just in time for the Opening Day Parade! Most of the population of the area turned out to greet us!
Image

Ahem again.

George already had the security precautuions in place.
Image
Any and all tresspassers considered suspicious were immediately taken down by one of George's highly trained agents!
Image

With things going well, two of the boards have started:

I've posted the new ratings as of today, and I'll update the team roster ratings a a leter time. Team Captains are in italics.

A very strong Board One!

Board One: m1334532415
What's Sportsmanship - Asoka (Asoka - Brazil) (2939)
Team Tyr -Katagamsky ( --- - Germany) (2870)
Keep Em Checkmated - Pcmvr (Peter - Netherlands) (2844)**
The Beerdrinkers - Gkthomas (Gerald - USA) (2830)
Caissa's Chosen - Iamachessstudent (Josh - USA) (2814)***
(Board Average - 2859)

From there on, thing get a bit easier for us mere mortals to particippate in!

lso posted is Board Four, which was one of the more pivotal boards in the 2011 Zapper. This year's could be the same.

Board Two: m1334336755
Caissa's Chosen- Redketchuplover ( --- - USA) (2294)***
Team Tyr -Roadrunner ( --- - Begium) (2290)**
What's Sportsmanship - Cmulligan (Chris - USA) (2244)**
The Beerdrinkers - Pwillows (Pete - Aust) (2013)**
Keep Em Checkmated - Islanderfan (Brian - USA) (1988)***
(Board Average - 2173)

A Board full of Zapper veterans! Brian and Red are both in their third Zappper, and everyone else is in their second! Quite a contrast to the three Zapper rookiess on Board One! Also, just a wee difference in the average ratings, perhaps?

When more are running, I'll post them here! I've sent out reminders to the few that haven't yet joined, so another day or so should hopefully do it!
Good Luck to all players!

All for tonight!

- Cliff.

Two more boards up and running!

Board Two: m1334532415

Caissa's Chosen - Krambambuli (Hans - Germany) (2708)
The Beerdrinkers - Jvanmechelen (Jan- Belgium) (2524)***
Keep Em Checkmated- Sisterofmercy (Hans - Belgium) (2321)**
What's Sportsmanship - Dmitryoglobin (Dmitry - England) (2378)
(Board Average - 2587)

Board Three: m1334626831

We're just waiting on langeli and tmichell to join on Board Five, then we're completely in motion.

Good time to mention, though, that we have a standby pool of alternates. I
mic, sorim, capacuba, and spacebuffalo standing by. If one or more players are still unaccounted for by midnight, on Friday 20, the missing players will be filled from the alternate pool on the weekend. More tomorrow.

To be clear on the alternate, they are:

Alternates

Sorim (Sorim - Germany) (2389)
Mic (Mic - USA) (2312)
Capacuba ( --- - Cuba) (2258)
Spacebuffalo (Dave - USA) (1787)

And according to the
2012 Zapper Rules:
"(6).... The replacements will be as close to the departed players in rating as is possible."

Currently, the missing players are:

5. (What's Sportsmanship?) Langelli ( Leo - USA) (2070)
5. (The Beerdrinkers) Tmitchell (Tom - USA) (2017)

So, Langelli's spot would be taken by Capacuba, and Tmitcvhell's spot would be taken by Spacebuffalo.

But hopefully they'll join after recieving their reminder messages that are being sent tonight, anyway.

And I;ve typed all this for nothing!

The Zapper 2012 Memorial

This is a breakdown of the Board 1, Round 1 Match Games thus far:

I thought it would be interesting to give an opening breakdown and fast comments and synopsis to the games that are going down on Board 1 for the Zapper Memorial, the competition is very intense and the games should prove to be very hard fought and close..lets have a look:)

There are 10 games total, of those 1o game I break them down as follows:
1.e4: 5 games
1.d4: 4 games;
1.c4: 1 game total of 10 games..

Here are the beginning moves and opening breakdown of the above games:
Match: m1334532415

[White "gkthomas"]
[Black "pcmvr"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2830"]
[BlackElo "2844"]
[Game "g1105107189"]

CLASSICAL FRENCH:
1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Ng8f6 4.Bg5 Bf8e7 5.e5 Nf6d7 6.Bxe7 Qd8xe7 7.f4 O-O

The Classical French, a very respected and time honored opening, this game is still in the early stages, but this opening is full of interest and it will be very keen to see how the opponents play it!

[White "asoka"]
[Black "iamachessstudent"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2939"]
[BlackElo "2814"]
[Game "g1105107182"]

GRUNFELD DEFENSE 6. G3:
1.d4 Ng8f6 2.c4 g6 3.Nb1c3 d5 4.Ng1f3 Bf8g7 5.cxd5 Nf6xd5 6.g3
Nd5xc3 7.bxc3 b6 8.Bf1g2 Bc8b7 9.0-0 0-0 10.Qd1b3 Nb8d7 11.Bc1f4
c5 12.Ra1d1 cxd4 13.cxd4 Bb7e4 14.Nf3e5 Be4xg2 15.Kg1xg2 Nd7xe5
16.dxe5 Qd8e8 17.Rd1c1 e6 18.Rc1c7 Qe8d8 19.Rc7b7 g5

White chose a rare variation (6.g3) and the game left the books early, and it is still very much alive, both opponents will be using their imagination and skills totry and earn an advantage here!

[White "katagamsky"]
[Black "gkthomas"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2870"]
[BlackElo "2830"]
[Game "g1105107191"]

ENGLISH OPENING, RUBENSTEIN VARIATION:
1.c4 e5 2.g3 Nf6 3.Bf1g2 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.Ng1f3 Nc6 6.0-0 Nb6
7.Nb1c3 Bf8e7

A Rubenstein English, well in the opening stages,it should prove to get interesting very fast!

[White "iamachessstudent"]
[Black "pcmvr"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2814"]
[BlackElo "2844"]
[Game "g1105107183"]

NIMZO INDIAN, CLASSICAL VARIATION:
1.c4 e6 2.d4 Ng8f6 3.Nb1c3 Bf8b4 4.Qd1c2 0-0 5.a3 Bb4xc3 6.Qc2xc3
b6 7.Bc1g5 Bc8b7 8.e3 d6 9.Ng1e2 Nb8d7 10.Qc3d3 Bb7a6 11.Ne2c3
d5 12.Qd3c2 dxc4 13.Qc2a4 Ba6b7 14.Qa4xc4 c5 15.f3 Ra8c8 16.Bf1e2

This is a Classical Nimzo-Indian Defense...things tend to develop later in this old opening, and we are beginning the middle game now...

[White "asoka"]
[Black "katagamsky"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2939"]
[BlackElo "2870"]
[Game "g1105107188"]

NIMZO INDIAN, 4. F3 VARIATION:
1.d4 Ng8f6 2.c4 e6 3.Nb1c3 Bf8b4 4.f3 d5 5.a3 Bb4xc3 6.bxc3 c5
7.cxd5 Nf6xd5 8.dxc5 Qd8a5 9.e4 Nd5f6 10.Bc1e3 0-0 11.Qd1b3 Qa5c7
12.Ng1e2 Nf6d7 13.Ne2d4 Nd7xc5 14.Qb3c4 b6 15.Nd4b5 Qc7e7 16.Ra1d1
Nb8c6 17.Bf1e2 Bc8d7 18.Be3xc5 bxc5 19.Nb5d6

This is a sharper Nimzo-Indian than the Classical, and it looks to be going into a very interesting middle game, no doubt the best is yet to come here!

[White "katagamsky"]
[Black "iamachessstudent"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2870"]
[BlackElo "2814"]
[Game "g1105107185"]

GRUNFELD DEFENSE, 7. BE3 VARIATION:
1.d4 Ng8f6 2.c4 g6 3.Nb1c3 d5 4.cxd5 Nf6xd5 5.e4 Nd5xc3 6.bxc3
Bf8g7 7.Bc1e3 c5 8.Ra1c1 Qd8a5 9.Qd1d2 cxd4 10.cxd4 Qa5xd2 11.Be3xd2
0-0 12.Ng1f3 Bc8g4 13.Bd2e3 Bg4xf3 14.gxf3 e6 15.Bf1b5 a6 16.Bb5a4
b5 17.Ba4b3 a5

This is an interesting variation of the Grunfeld, which varied off the main line around move 15 or so,again both players will be looking for an edge here soon...

[White "katagamsky"]
[Black "pcmvr"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2870"]
[BlackElo "2844"]
[Game "g1105107190"]

FRENCH DEFENSE, STENITZ VARIATION:

7.Bc1e3 cxd4 8.Nf3xd4 Bf8c5 9.Qd1d2 O-O

This is another variation of the Classical French, with an early White push of e5 Things can get hot fast here, so stay tuned :)

[White "gkthomas"]
[Black "asoka"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2830"]
[BlackElo "2939"]
[Game "g1105107187"]

SICILIAN DEFENSE, 2. C3 VARIATION:
1.e4 c5 2.c3 e6 3.Nf3 Nb8c6 4.d4 d5 5.e5 Ng8e7 6.Bf1d3 Bc8d7

A variation of the c3 Sicilian which caught my eye as early as blacks 2nd move...e6 not common but leads to very independent positions, allot like the Advance French Defense, I will be keeping an interested eye on this game myself !

[White "asoka"]
[Black "pcmvr"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2939"]
[BlackElo "2844"]
[Game "g1105107186"]

FRENCH DEFENSE, CLASSICAL VARIATION (Alekhine Attack):
1.d4 e6 2.e4 d5 3.Nb1c3 Ng8f6 4.Bc1g5 Bf8e7 5.e5 Nf6d7 6.h4 Nb8c6
7.Qd1d2 f6 8.exf6 Nd7xf6 9.0-0-0 h6 10.Bg5e3 0-0

Another Classical French, and still in the opening, tho things will get fired up fast here as well :)

[White "gkthomas"]
[Black "iamachessstudent"]
[Result ""]
[WhiteElo "2830"]
[BlackElo "2814"]
[Game "g1105107184"]

SICILIAN DEFENSE, 2. C3 VARIATION:
1.e4 c5 2.c3 d5 3.exd5 Qd8xd5 4.d4 Nb8c6 5.Nf3 Bc8g4 6.Be2 cxd4 7.cxd4 e6

And another c3 Sicilian, tho this one is following theory,at least for now:)

Well there you have it, a fast and insightful overview of the board 1 games..I will be updating this rapidly, so as to keep up with the transitions to middle game, endgame, results and so on, I hope you liked :)

Excellent !!!
I was always 'scared' of commenting on games involving high rated players, because I thought they would get 'offended' by my 'inexperienced' remarks.
If you have the confidence, go for it !
Looks very professional; a great addition. Gives a little 'Expertise' to the fun side of the Zapper Reports.
Well done ! Please continue this great idea.

That was a fantastic report on the Board One games, Josh! Even under normal cirumstances, I would lack the time to put that together...and quite franly, never even thought of it!

I know it might be time consuming for you, but if I was to emaiil you the macth numbers, do you think you could do that for the other boards?

Great work, Josh!

Re: 2012 Zapper Memorial Tournament Reports

Post by ecperreault » Thu Apr 26, 2012 12:52 pm

Maybe the Zapper Memorial has a subversive team - The Polish Squad, at work within it's core. Should 'they' win all their games, the usual 'titterings' of a 'fix' will surly commence.
islanderfan goes down in flames to start another 'Zapper'. So the 2012 Zapper Memorial Tournament is OFFICIALLY entered into the books now that that bit of 'tradition' has once again been extended.
It is currently raining near the ocean in the 'Great' Northwest... who would have thunk.

Well, after two weeks, the entire Zapper 2012 is in play!

Board Five isnow underway, just before my announcement, luckily! )

The Board tournament numbers are as follows:

Board One - m1334532415
Board Two - m1334597361
Board Three - m1334626831
Board Four - m1334336755
Board Five - m1335680299

Quick observation here! Isn't it amazing how, in each of the three Zapper tournaments, somebody's computer has been 'zapped'? In 2010 it was Wade (pumpkin), Abiodun, and the Net-chess server, in 2011 it was John (johnrbrown)'and this year, 2012' me!

I think, looking down on us, Jeff still wants to live up yo his nickname here! lol!

;)

I have some followup to do on these great games going on...I will NOT do any analyzing on the game going on, just giving alternate variations and opinions so I cant influence the games in any way :)

This game left the book as early as move 8 and is really interesting on both sides... lots of territory left to explore and the game is pretty dynamically balanced! 23.f3 Rd8d5 And now, was I surprised when Dave showed me his move :24.Rb7xf7 Kg8xf7 25.Qe4xh7 Qc8g8 26.fxg4 Kf7e7 27.Bc1a3 Ke7d7 Now what a wild position, attack against defense... A relatively rare variation (2..e6) against the Alapin Sicilian, but one that gives lots of play, in fact this variation has turned into what could have been an Advanced French Defense ! ( 1.e4 e6; 2. d4,d5; 3.e5) Nice play :) 10.cxd4 Nc6b4 11.Bd3xg6 fxg6 12.a3 Nb4c6 13.b4 O-O 14.Nb1c3 Bd7e8 All I can say here is that it is totally unclear tome !! :)

{black resigned.} The first complete game here ! Black played well thru the opening, but the critical move was 12...Ne7?? (12...Kb8 was necessary with an slightly inferior but very playable game)!
1-0

{Checkmate} 1-0 Another Wing Gambit Deferred! and this time White took the point home ! The game was always just the slightest in White's favor and he brought the game home strong ! Just a couple of observations at what I think are key points/moves in the game :
18...e5(??seems to be the move that really lost for Black, who up till then was actually slightly better!!) the correct move,in my opinion was 18...Qb7! i.e.19.e5, dxe5; 20.fxe5, Nfd5; 21.Nxd5, Qxd5 and Black is still better!
