The new forum

Post by gmiller » Mon Nov 21, 2011 11:09 am

For the most part, this new forum has all the functionality of the old one. Couple of good new features are that messages aren't automatically marked read if you don't actually click on them, and you can add attachments (like images) directly to posts without having to link to them from a different website.

Thank you for direct attachments!!! That was a bother, in the old one.

hey Greg unless I missed it, is there a link back to the home page on the forum so I don;t have to keep backtracking to the previous page to get to the home page?

There is not. I was hoping this new version has a way to put a link there without modifying the code. I haven't found it yet.

Now there's another way to include a board in your posts. Use the code below to include a board in FEN notation in your post:

Code: Select all

[fen]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR[/fen]
The result looks like this:
[fen]rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/8/8/PPPPPPPP/RNBQKBNR[/fen]

Or, include an entire PGN game in your post using this code:

Code: Select all

[pgn]
[Event "m1315218948"]
[Site "net-chess.com"]
[White "sorim"]
[Black "gmiller"]
[Result "*"]
[WhiteTimeLeft "005d 00:01:33"]
[BlackTimeLeft "009d 10:13:24"]
[Game "g1105081596"]

1.e4 c5 2.Ng1f3 Nb8c6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nf3xd4 d6 5.Nb1c3 g6 6.Bc1e3
Bf8g7 7.Qd1d2 Bc8d7 8.f3 a6 9.Bf1c4 *
[/pgn]
The result is this:
[pgn][Event "m1315218948"]
[Site "net-chess.com"]
[White "sorim"]
[Black "gmiller"]
[Result "*"]
[WhiteTimeLeft "005d 00:01:33"]
[BlackTimeLeft "009d 10:13:24"]
[Game "g1105081596"]

1.e4 c5 2.Ng1f3 Nb8c6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nf3xd4 d6 5.Nb1c3 g6 6.Bc1e3
Bf8g7 7.Qd1d2 Bc8d7 8.f3 a6 9.Bf1c4 *[/pgn]

I modified the ChessFlash BBCode so that you can make the diagram initially shown, one of the moves from the game. Open the tag with "PGN=xx" where xx is the number of half moves where the diagram should start. For example "pgn=10" would show the diagram after black's turn on move 5. Leave the "=" off altogether to have it start from the initial position.

Code: Select all

I'm only able to see 5 ranks without scrolling (in the Zapper tournament reports thread) and possibly others.

Images are shown in a frame if they're above a certain size, if you click on it, it will expand so you can view the full image.

Sticky!

Since some of the new functions of the new board are explained here: Couldn't you make this very thread sticky?

Good idea. I extracted all of the information out into a new post so it's all together.
