Jeff Jones Memorial Tournament this July!

Post by cliff » Fri Jan 01, 2010 11:30 pm

This coming July 15 will be the third anniversary of Jeff Jones’s passing. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jeff, but I’ve read the many testimonial posts here following his death. I’ve also had the pleasure of playing Joshua, his nephew here, ‘iamachessstudent’ is his playername.

At the time of his demise, Brian (‘islanderfan’) suggested a tournament in his honour.
This July, I would like to have one. I know Jeff had many friends here, and the tournament format would depend on the number of people interested in playing. I would like all the friends of Jeff to let me know if you’d like to enter, and we can work things out from there.

I do know that David (davidswhite), Brian, Josh, and myself are in. I hope that there will be many more. Perhaps we can make this an annual event. I understand that Jeff’s nickname was “the Zapperâ€

Just recieved a private message from 'stonedmaster':

Actually, I had assumed that anyone wishing to play would just post here, but if anyone would rather send me a private message or email me, that's fine also.

In as long as its not a RR with more than 20 people (o;

Would prefer the slower TCs of either starting with 50 days with no add back or 12 2 or such.

Count me in. Zapper was defeating me like always. I'd be proud fighting for one or two points in a tour in his name. Time controls do not matter.

By the way, some other names mentioned in tributes to Jeff were:

hamot,kcollins,pe,nhahtuy,mic,
mlaurent, kode, energy, Jonathan Pettit, Ketchum, redketchuplover, Maxim

Would like to hear from them also. The entrants so far number eleven!

I think you're right, Brian. As a matter of fact, I've checked most of those names I listed, and the only one I can see that looks active is mlaurent.
And, of course, energy, who has already joined.

One other thing: I planned this for the anniversary of Jeff's death, but July may cause scheduling problems for some players, due to round two of the 2010 Open taking place then. Does anyone have any opinions as to just when we should hold the, now officially called, "Zapper Memorial Tournament"?

Should we perhaps hold it in February or March? :?

Feedback is appreciated.

Thanks.

I was thinking it'd take more time than I have, but looking at the ratings it seems like a lot of my games will be over pretty quick. So count me in too.

As of now, we have fifteen participants:

Player Rating
Davidswhite 3000
Stonedmaster 2839
Cnita 2801
Jpost 2774
Iamachessstudent 2727
Cliff 2676
Energy 2628
Mluka 2401
Johnb 2307
rhand 2293
Gregorgysi 2188
gmiller 2136
mgomdysey 2106
Jsnyder 2016
Islanderfan 1906

I think we'll make a cutoff date of January 15, or 24 players, whichever comes first. Many more than that will be a bit unwieldly because of the way I'd like to set this up. I've tried to take into account the fact that many of us will be playing in the 2010 Open, and will already have a good number of hard games on their plate, and some players (Myself included!), don't like to carry too drastically big a number of games at once. Personally, I don't like to carry any more than 20 or 25 maximum. Hence, I've put together a way that would requite no one to being playing any more than an extra six to ten games, depending on the final number of entrants. Below are what I figure will be the most likely numbers:

20 Players Max.gms/pp

Rd 1 4 Groups of 5 players - DRR 8 Games
Rd 2 2 Groups of 4 players - DRR 6 Games
Rd 3 2 players - 5gM 5 Games
19 Games

24 Players

Rd 1 4 Groups of 6 players - SG/DRR 5/10 Games
Rd 2 2 Groups of 4 players - DRR 6 Games
Rd 3 2 players - 5gM 5 Games
16/21 Games

Now the tricky part starts!

The pairing for Round One will be complately at random. The method I selected for getting those random numbers will make it totally transparent! No possibility of cheating or favourtism! (See? I'm not a politician!) That method I'll discuss in a post tomorrow. It's been a long day here, and I wanted to ask something else of everyone in the event first.

Whichever Round One group I end up in, I'll post, and invite the others in that group. What I need is for someone in each of the other groups to post theirs, and to send me the match number or post it here. Preferably both. I hope that will be agreeable to everyone. If, by some chance I make it to Round Two, I'll again post and invite. But I'd need someone who advances to do the same. Ditto for the final round. With the match numbers, I'll post weekly updates in the forum. And perhaps Greg would be willing to post announcements as to when each round starts.

And, the second round won't start until every game in the first round is finished. That'll keep any games from overlapping and the total number of game any player is playing to manageable numbers, considering the concurrent 2010 Open.

I hope everyone is willing to help on this. I think this could be the easiest way to go, and should keep everyone involved also!

Let me know what you think?

Hi Greg,

Now, as far as time controls go, I would like to go for something simple.

27d + 0 is pretty quick.....

Something like 30d + 12h, or 30d + 8h, one extra day per 2 or 3 moves made? Would still be fairly fast but still have some cushion.

Only half kidding, David. I was hoping some somewhat odd number would get a suggestion or two. I even considered posting a 1d+47d control! I'm certain that would have got something!

:)

Seriously though, how about the standard default 30d+2d for time controls? That should be plenty of time, I think.

The final roster for the 2010 Zapper Memorial Tournament is now set, and I think we have a pretty good field of players! Eight different countries are represented, and two players from "parts unknown", so we have a nice, international aspect to it as well!

Davidswhite 2994 USA
Ramawolf 2978 GER
Stonedmaster 2825 x
Cnita 2801 ROM
Jpost 2774 NETH
martijn 2753 NETH
Iamachessstudent 2745 USA
Abiodun 2740 USA
Strongplayer 2716 USA
Cliff 2689 CAN
Energy 2628 NOR
jvanmechelen 2466 BEL
Mluka 2401 USA
rhand 2309 x
Johnb 2301 CAN
Gregorgysi 2267 GER
redketchuplover 2235 USA
gmiller 2137 USA
mgomdysey 2106 USA
Jsnyder 2016 USA
kmcpherson 1923 UK
Islanderfan 1916 USA

(Ratings as of 11:45pm, January 15/10)

If anyone is curious by the way, the tournament average rating is 2487.

I was intending to post the pairings tonight, but as some of you know, my wife recently underwent surgery, and we were at the hospital for a post-op examination today (for about 5 hours!) and I'm beat and have one helluva headache, so I hope you'll all understand if I put that off until tomorrow.

(Not to worry, Brian, I'll still try my best to get you paired with the top five, however!)

I'm looking forward to this tournament very much and I hope that we can make this an annual event! And like the Open, I'm looking forward to playing some of you that I've never had the pleasure of meeting before!

Check back Saturday for the good, or bad (depending on your pairings) news!

- Cliff

Pairing Method Used:

A random number was generated using the ‘=RAND()’ command, which was then multiplied by 100. The result of this was divided by the numerical value of the third letter of each entrant’s playername (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.). The result of all the this was then multiplied by another random number generated with the same command as before. This process was repeated three times to get a final set of results. These were rounded to two decimal points, and then sorted in descending order. The first group of five players were put in round A, the second in round B. Since there were 22 players, Rounds C & D were each given 6 players, C receiving the next 6, and D the final 6. I know this sounds like a crazy system, but it was the closest thing to a truly random mix I could come up with!
(The Worksheet program used to generate all this was MS Excell 2000 v.9.0.)
* The two decimal numbers to the right of each player was the final number generated and used in the final sortation.

Round One, Series A will be posted by jvanmechelen, Series B by cliff, Series C by islanderfan, and Series C will (tentatively, until I hear back from him for certain), by mluka. We should post these on March 1, I think, to give everyone a chance to see them.
Round Two postings will be decided as we go along, same with Round Three. All rounds will be rated events. Those posting the Series should email me the ‘match numbers’, after they post them.

My email address is: cliffdwyer@homail.com

* I’ll post Tournament Updates in the forum wvery Friday starting March 12.
