Two final points:

I forgot to wish everyone in the tournament the best of luck;

And, I also forgot to tell Brian not to beat David too badly!

No, you'll have to join your tournament, which islanderfan will post on March 1. You will recieve an invitation. So will the other players in your event. It will be called '2010 Zapper Round One-C'.

Thanks for askng. I forgot to tell the players who will post them to name them "2010 Zapper Round One-A or B or C or D" whichever it is.

Best of luck, Cat!

This morning I recieved an email from nhathuy and she asked if she could join the tournament. I sent her one back, telling her that the cutoff date had been Jan.15, and what I would do is make her 'first alternate' - a replacement in case anyone had to drop out for any reason.

A little later, I decided to do some checking and found that nhathuy and Jeff had played nearly 30 games, from 2002 to 2006.

I'm of the belief that there are very few rules that can't be bent or broken at times for a good reason. Hence, if the others in my group B, which would be iamachessstudent, abiodun, redketchuplover, and gregorgysi have no real problems with it, I'd be willing to add nhathuy to our group. All this would mean is we'd be playing to extra games each, 10 instead of 8. As before the first two will advance, so nothing else would be affected.

I'll wait for a bit of feedback before I contact nhathuy back again, so what do you think, folks? Shall we make this one exception?

Well, nhathuy, the decision is pretty easy to make! You're in, and good luck!

The new round one, series B is:

Iamachessstudent 2727
Abiodun 2720
Cliff 2689
redketchuplover 2235
nhathuy 2231
Gregorgysi 2188

Thanks for your input, folks!

Yes. I'll be posting Series B, Jan (jvanmechelen) will post Series A, Brian (islanderfan) will post Series C, and Series D will be posted by Mike (miluka).

Series D may end up being posted by someone else in the event however. I'm waiting to hear back from Mike if he can post it before the March 4 start date. As it turns out, he's moving on March 1, and that's the date the other three Series will be posted on. He sent me an email about posting it late, and I asked him if he'd be able to post it by the 4th, but he hasn't answered yet. I know how busy it can get around moving time, and I'm sure he'll get back to me in a few days.

Anyway, All the other series will be in the "New Games" section on March 1, and I'm hopeful Series D will be also.

Check back here for more details in the meantime.

Thanks for asking, Joshua. Sometimes I forget to post these things.

On January 27, a rather unexpected event occured:

Our somewhat impatient islanderfan posted the challange for Round One, Series C in the Zapper, a wee bit ahead of schedule! So far, he, cnita, and ramawolf have joined.

:o

I can admit to a fair bit of anticipation to the Zapper myself, and don't really mind starting it early. However I have one large concern. This weekend is the start of the 2010 Open, and a fair number of us will be participating in it as well. This will add an extra ten or more games to our plate by Monday. A possible early start to the Zapper would add another ten games. Some of us don't like to carry too many games at one time, and I'm worried that this may make it difficult for all of us to compete in both. I know I perfer to carry only 15-20 games at one time.

:?

In a situation like this however, I'd be more than willing to take on the extra game load if eveyone else wishes to. However, if it means losing any players that we now have, I'd perfer to wait at least another few weeks before starting up. Once again, I need some feedback, especially from the other players in Series C - mgomdysey, kmcphereson, and David.

And, if we do decide to wait, I hope Brian, cnita, and ramawolf will all be willing to unjoin the current one posted, and let that one fade away. Pretty Please? Brian will repost it later, of course.

Anyway, you've been a great group for giving me the feedback I need, so I know you'll do it again!

Thanks!

Er....okay.

:?

Sounds good to me. I see that mgomdysey has joined as well. So maybe we can start early, but I'm still inclined to wait for a few more responses before deciding for sure!

If so, great. If not, Guess that Brian will have to wait (angry)!

Cliff,
as soon as I saw Brian's posting,I e-mailed him to tell him that he'd jumped the gun by some 5 weeks and, according to my understanding, wasn't supposed to post until March 1st.
I haven't joined nor do I think that Andreas(ramawolf) has since we both expected an early March start.Obviously,we neglected to take into account the full measure of Brian's instability but I wouldn't want his surge of chessroids to stampede the whole Zapper Memorial Tournament into a premature launch.
I look forward to joining immediately on March 1st by which time the 1st round of the site championship should be well under way so I would hope that Brian will keep it in his pants until then. It's to his advantage anyway since it'll delay his being eliminated by at least 4 weeks.

Heck, I've always wanted to be a ref! As soon as I conquered Everest and swam the Atlantic, i was going to get around to it!

Anyway, we're back on coure, with the start date of March 1!

:)

And, since we set a precedent with one late admission, I took it upon myself to let jpettit join, and seeded him in Series A. Now all four series have six entrants, and a perfect Cosmic Balance has bee achieved!

8)

The new Series A, and final lineup follow:

To be posted on March 1, 2010 by starred players(*):

And to those of you in Series C, which would be jpost, martijn, strongplayer, mluka, rhand, and jsnyder two additional notes:

One, Mike (mluka) is moving on March 1, so he may be posting this event a day or three late. Not to worry, I doubt that will effect the Round One finish drastically;

And two, jsnyder is also moving, and said if he had to be squeezed out to let jpettit play, he'd understand. Not to worry though, since this Series will start a few days late, if he has to join late, it still works out. Since he and Mike are in the same Series, it' fine!

(God, don't you love it when things come together so well?)

Mine too, however this year I only ended up with one 2800ish player in my bracket with the rest evenly matched so may have a few competitive games going.

I figure I'd have to score three upsets in my bracket, so I'd have to say I'm not expecting any Round Two action!

Davidswhite 2994
Ramawolf 2978
Cnita 2801
mgomdysey 2106
Islanderfan (*) 1906
kmcpherson 1903

Well, that's Series C posted. I guess it's soon enough, so if anyone else wants to go ahead, that's fine. ALl I ask is when the match starts. you post the match number here, and let everyone know.

And of course, if you wwant to wait for March 1, that's great too. That's what I'm going to do.

Hmmm...my French is so bad, I honestly couldn't understand most of that, so I went back to the match Brian posted.

:?

Then I understood that he had merely translated the match comment into French! My compliments!

:)

And we have to cut Brian some slack here. He's obviously worried that now that Team Canada has dispatched Gremany, Russia, and Slovakia, we're going to do the same to Team USA on Sunday!

:P

All kidding aside, I'm really looking forward to the 2010 Zapper next week! I'm sure it's going to be a lot of fun for us all!

:D

(p.s. Lord! The Canada-Slovakia just ended! When I typed the third paragraph here, it was 3-0 Canada with 5 minutes left. Canada just won 3-2, and I seem to have at least 1000 more grey hairs then I did then!)

When all the matches have been posted and started there'll be a new thread, the "Zapper 2010 Report". I'll post updates once or twice a week.

Some thirty years back, there was a local celeberty here by the name or Paul Rimstead. He was a long time columnist for the Toronto Telegram, and later the Toronto Sun. He also ran a half-comedic campaign for mayor one year (and got 10,000 votes!), managed a local wrestler, and generally was a flamboyant city character.

When he died in the mid-70's, there was a memorial (more of a wake, really - "Rimmer" was Irish-Canadian), helld in the Toronto Sun parking lot. Hundreds showed up, NHLers who knew him, politicians, other local celeberties, and of course, his friends (he had many, I knew him also, but there's another story or two), heck, even his enemies.

It was a lovely summer day, mid-70's, sunny, and overall a great weather day. Without warning, completely unforecast, a dark cloud moved across the sky. It began to rain, and the wind began to blow. Concession umbrellas were blown over, hail the size of golfballs fell, and people grabbed whatever cover they could find.

Ten minutes later, as fast as it began, the storm was over.

The Publisher of the Sun, who hosted the party, took the stage and announced that Rimmer must have been watching. It was his way of saying "Thanks", and getting the last word!

Perhaps Brian's missing posts were "zapped", abd Jeff's sending a "Thanks for the idea" message to him!

by the way, just as a matter of coincidence, my computer crashed last night when I was first typing this...

hmmm......

We've decided to make the "Zapper" an annual event, to be played every March, so you've got a while to wait before the next one.

Consider yourself the very first official entrant to
"Zapper Memorial Tournament 2011"
in the meanwhile!
