Number of player on Net-Chess?

Post by cliff » Wed Sep 23, 2009 11:41 pm

Just for curiousity (out of boredom?), I decided to got to the users profile search page and punch in some ratings and take a look at the numbers: Now this is very unscientific, and more that certin, there is a lot of inaccuracy with my count, but I think it gives some idea of the figures.

My browser shows 31 players per screen so I 'paged down' and counted, then added on the extras, Then I looked at a random sample, 30 from each breakdown, and counted the active players (logged on in the last year), and got a percent. Then took that percent of each breakdown.

Here's what I got:

2500 - 3000 - 326 - c.85% active - 277
2000 - 2499 - 2139 - c.85% active - 1818
1500 - 1999 - 15196 - c.65% active - 9877
1000 - 1499 - 3100 - c.35 5 active - 1085
500 - 999 - 1581 - c.0% active - 0*
0 - 499 - 2306 - c.0% active - 0*
TOTALS - 24648 members - 13057 active - c.53%

(*For the '500 - 999' and the '0 - 499', I checked 50 in each and found none. I assume they were newbies who didn't stick around. I also checked extra in the 1500 rating and the 100 rating, and found hardly any. Most hadn't logged in since the early 2000's!)

I asked Greg once about the number of members, but he said he didn't have the setup to track it. I doubt this helps much either, but it's a start!

I invite anyone with suffucient time on the hands, or who is having a boring night like me, to see if they can improve on these figures!

'yawn'

:)

I think my statistics software would have gotten these numbers much quicker.

Which page did you use to find the # of players in each rating range?

I don't doubt your software can do better, Dave!

My "software" was my eyes and a rough count, on the number of players in each rating division.

If you want to give it a whirl, I'd be curious to see more accurate numbers.

The page I wnet to is
http://www.net-chess.com/playersearch.php

Let me know when you get the numbers crunched, okay? I'm kinda curious now,,,

Thank you!

I downloaded the data and now and then, I try to make sense of it

Perhaps it is possible to fit a distribution to the relation between the rating and being active... so that could save much work and give better results.

Hm, wait and let's see :)

Just as a side note... I got across the following usernames:

aweirdkid
thatweirdkid
someweirdperson
keker
kekere
kekerer
kylesdamann
kylesdamannn
kylesdammannn
kylek
kylekkk
kylekkkk
kylekkkkk
kkylekkkkk
kkyylekkkkk
kkyyllekkkkk
kkyylleekkkkk
kkyylleekkkkkd
kkyylleekkkkkdd
kkyylleekkkkkddd
kkyylleekkkkkddddd
kkyylleekkkkkdddddfffff

...and then some idiotic usernames created havoc when reading list into the database... namely Mr. Igotbannedonworldchessnetwork and his colleagues.

I know! Some of the names (besides obviously being the same person) were pretty darned....is idiotic the word I'm looking for...I recall that MrIgotbannedfromchessworld nick.

At any rate, it seems to me that the most active players were those rated about 2000 and up.

Sounds to me like you got a pretty fair start on the project, Dave. If I get a chance over the next week or so, I'll try to look more in depth into the lists and see if I can come up with some more data that might make it easier for your software to handle.

Best of luck,
Cliff.

Well, I've to say that my slowchess.com study has a pretty low priority in my daily life right now... :? there are more important things I have to figure out...
