Annoying Practice!

Post by cliff » Fri Sep 11, 2009 4:42 pm

Now this si the type of thing that I find very irresponsible and inconsiderate to other players:

The tournament is m1252058543.

The Start Date was September 4, 2009.

The "player" that entered was 'seandowney'.

His results?

In other words, he forgot all these games? I once met a potato with a better attention span!

GRRR!

What do you want to say?

You find enough other players with a longer attention span than potatoes... :P I, for example, am an onion. I like those plants.

On the other hand, he's new here.

If he comes back to play regularly, be happy about it. I know enough internet games that amused me for a short time, and then I just never came back to play more... now, chess tickles my mind. It's a habit of mine.

I relish the game myself! You never know what possiblities will turnip in a game, and finding ways to beet your opponent is always fun!

So, lettuce all just enjoy!

I think this is a general issue with first-time players. Often people join the site and join games not realizing how slow these games are. I remember my first day I was not sure how to make the games start.

Then, when my first game was accepted, I forgot how to log in again! Took me a while to get into the habit of checking back every once in a while, just to be discouraged that no one had made a move yet. (That's why I initially turned on my email notices.)

Most sites are interactive chess sites, so the notion of waiting many hours or days is foreign. As much as there are notes all around the site telling new users what to expect, most people don't read the instructions.

So, basically in any tournament of many people that take a few days to collect all the opponents, such as with 10 or more players, I just expect 2 or 3 of them to be complete newbies who will not even make their first move. I just wish it didn't take 30 days for their timeouts to take effect.

I suppose that really is the annoying thing, a you mentioned. That's why I post tournaments with shorter time limits, such as 7d + 12h. And it's aldo why I avoid posted tournaments with more than one or two 'newbies' in them. I often don't expect these games to ever really happen. They just sit there, and finally go away when the time forfeit occurs. But that's just the way it goes.

For the most part, I can pick and choose the events, and just have to grin and bear it when the opponent isn't really there!
