Kasporov is too busy being a politician.

fischer? Insane! Traitor! Hate mongerer! Racist!

I think that an insane person who followed scientology to the T...didn't have to die if he sought proper treatment...he was an insane cultist, racist, traitor who got what he deserved. My wife and myself put our lives on the line so that idiot could have his paranoid free speech. He was a sick delusional human...who no longer resembled what he was almost 40 years ago. He really died in 1975 when he refused to play Karpov...and found scientology...remember he gave most of his winnings to that so called cult church...

i am sad to read such comments about anyone who obviously is not able to reply - as an englishman notwithstanding the american english way of life - free speech?.... why anyone should rant about this individual who gave chess a name in the states that the russians were not invincible at this game of ours - why oh why remember the the bad when the good is probably more important??

Gentlemen, Mr Fischer was a free man and entitled to persue any religion he chose for himself. That's one of the basic freedoms this country was built on. Many men and women have laid down their lives to preserve that right. We don't have to agree, but we do have to live and let live. I tip my hat to Bibby Fischer. He just might be the best chess player that ever lived.

English vs. American???

What the heck is that guy talking about...Mr. Fischer ranted anti-semitism, was glad that 911 happened to america...he was a pariah...everywhere he went he fell in love with a 19 year old girl and played chess to get millions to fund his fetishes....people should pay more attention to this idiot...when he won the world championship in 1972 USCF grew to about 43000 members...his impact was good but not incredible...yes, he probably is the best chessplayer that ever played but he chose not to play and to retreat into paranoia/depression...I met Spaaski in 84' in San Diego at a simul and he had only kind words to say about Mr. Fischer...maybe we should leave it at that...but, the debate about his worth to chess will go on forever. And as for commenting on him after his death: I also made similar comments about mr. fischer long before he died on this site...so I guess free speech applies to me also, eh??!!! To the british guy that was offended that I comment on Mr. Fischer's antics: where do you get off???

Mic, Your ranting and raving lessens the impact of your words. Yes, everything you say is true. Bobby Fischer was a troubled individual, but he's dead. It's all over now. Let it go!

ranting & raving??

I believe I am just expressing an opinion that is held by many people around the world...so what is there to let go of????

Mic, The ability to express ones opinion is what makes this country great. I don't have to agree with you to appreciate your words. Hope we cross paths in a game.

the british guy - you refer to is me - i have a name - i totally agree with langelli. the forum should be used for general discussion = but this is not general - you are attacking a person - great to do in chess but not surely here, i agree that gentlemen should act accordingly - in my mind and my opinion -- you are rude and not a gentleman = the forum list was rip - tribute to chess player not as a human being who may or may not have upset your values on living in a free world. again sadly you annoy me!!!!!

Sir Collins:

I was discussing mostly fact based issues on the late Robert Fischer...it's a general forum anything can be discussed in a reasonable way...which I did...soooooo, what's your point...if I annoy you why don't you challenge me to a game of chess...and we can settle it on the board!

Mic :P  :D

I agree with kcollins. It's a matter of showing class. Or unfortunately sometimes the lack of it...

For an example, look at how Carlsen makes sure everyone knows Kramnik was playing below his normal strength because of illness. That is class.

http://www.chessvibes.com/videos/corus- ... -carlsen2/

On the opposite side we can use the example of islanderfan, who likes to call people he disagrees with "flaming homo". That is so lacking of class he probably doesn't even recognize it.

(So you may as well retract the challenge islanderfan, I will never willingly play people behaving like this. Yes I know, I'm just a flaming homo too, so you don't care. Good for you.)

I think everybody agrees about the legacy he left. Truly the Great, I don´t think anyone could have resisted his chesspower at his best days/games! His chess was clear and pure in logic, raw and wild in spirit! Long live your games, Bobby. 8)

I don't agree at all with anyone excusing Fischer's behavior as a "mental problem", or as it's more commonly presented, as an illness. I stopped one class short of a minor is psychology, so I'm by no means an expert on the issue. But I doubt you'll find a mental illness where the symptoms are hating America, Americans, Jews, and breaching a UN embargo.

I don't really care if you love him for his play, or hate him for his personality, but please don't try to classify being a jerk as a mental illness. He may indeed have had some mental illness, but there are no illnesses that cause the behavior most people dislike him for. If there were, you'd have to classify a good fraction of people in the Middle East as mentally ill for sharing the same beliefs.

yeah, G. Miller!!!!

Thanks for saying what most everyone is thinking....the Dick Cavett interview was a different Fischer...and you are correct, his behavior and hatred of ethnic groups was disdainful. Cavett chooses to remember the Fischer of a different time and place....he chose his behavior and hatreds...like some other people we all know who want to wipe us out. Enough said.

Nils, when I 1st came on this site in 1999,you and Mark(cornstalk)were the guys all the rest of us looked up to as the strongest players we had.In those days the ratings still had relevance...as opposed to today. We followed your games against each other with reverence.
Recently,Mark got flustered by what he considered to be a wrong done to him by Greg and he let his temper out on Greg, issued an ultimatum which had to be declined and, then, withdrew from the site.
All the while Brian(islanderfan)nipped away at Mark with juvenile assertions that he must be a flaming homo.
It may be hard for you to believe but Brian's actually a decent guy.
His problem is that he has no sense of what is and isn't appropriate
and he can't keep his mouth shut.
Now,I see that he's chosen to direct the same sort of invectives in your direction and I have to protest that the forum continues to permit it!

The fact that I married a girl from Tromso 4 months before the Fischer
/Spaaski match of 1972 has no bearing on my being upset about islanderfan's abuse of privelege on this forum and, even though I like him
personally,I think his posting rights here should be suspended until such
time as he's prepared to conform to conduct appropriate to a chess forum
and not that of a high school yard verbal brawl.

Regards,
David

Dave agree with you somewhat. Who cares about cornstalk and what his gripe was. Who cares if Fisher was mentally retarded, or a great chess player or a non american. He was a GM who knew the game, could probably kill all of us in this great game, and has now passed on. Someone overseas decided to make mention of something else related to him. Again I ask WHO CARES? He is dead mourn if you wish and move on. There is a saying that I learned awhile ago, "Quit sweating the small xxxx".
As far as knowing to keep my mouth shut, my opinons are my own, that is my privlege and my right. You don't have to agree or listen to them but I will keep saying them. Dave I don't look at you in any other way other than a good friend in chess who someday(by cheating:) ) will finally defeat you in chess. But don't portray me as an immature child who has no sense of reality. I don't know ever culture or everyones views but americans aren't regarded in the highest quality. So maybe Europe deserves some of it back to them; which brings another cliche " Can't stand the heat get your . out of the kitchen".
Ok am off my soapbox.... for now

Thoughtful

Really? I never had an inkling others were following them. Those were good games though, too bad they are gone from the archives. Mark always was, and still is, a better player than me though.
davidswhite wrote: Recently,Mark got flustered by what he considered to be a wrong done to him by Greg and he let his temper out on Greg, issued an ultimatum which had to be declined and, then, withdrew from the site.
I know. Too bad Mark forgot his manners. I have strongly disagreed with Greg on occasions, but it's his site. End of discussion.

People are seldom all black or all white, so I believe you.
davidswhite wrote: His problem is that he has no sense of what is and isn't appropriate

Personally, I think he can flap his gums as much as he like. It's the continuing disrespect of people he hardly knows that tells me all I need to know. It's worst for him though, he's pushing people away he could have much fun with instead. Fortunately, as opposed to in real life, all it takes here on Net-Chess is a new nickname and a change of attitude...
davidswhite wrote: Now,I see that he's chosen to direct the same sort of invectives in your direction and I have to protest that the forum continues to permit it!
Not so much for me, I'm all grown up, but it is important for the continuing friendly tone of the forums that he doesn't get the impression he rules the roost by crowing the highest.
davidswhite wrote: The fact that I married a girl from Tromso 4 months before the Fischer/Spaaski match of 1972
Lucky you, the Tromsø girls are very nice... ;-)

If he can't stop himself and continues to degrade the tone of the forums, then maybe. For now I'm not too concerned. Besides, it's up to Greg to decide what level he wants in his forums.

Thank you for your support David, it's appreciated.
