Ratings

Post by kholdstare » Sat Jul 22, 2006 11:10 pm

Hello,

Let's say my rating was 2500 and my opponent's rating was 2600 when we started our game. If I resign when my rating is 2600 and his rating is 2500, then what ratings will the ELO system base on?

Thanks.

The rating will be based on your ratings when the game ends, so you'd be rated as a loss to a 2500 as a 2600 player.

Hi. I just started playing on this site, and already 2 people have droped out of the games I've played. So it has said that I have won 2 games, but I started with a ranking of 1500, but now it is down to 1269. If I win, is'nt my level suposed to go up? Whats wrong? :?

Provisional rating

Your rating will jump quite a bit till you have 20 finished games. The person you beat was way below your rating. I think with the formula used on the site put you 400 points above his rating.

One more real quick question. If i defeat someone better than me I move up more, right?

Until you have 20 games completed, your rating will be calculated as a provisional rating which is very different from how an established rating is calculated.

For provisional ratings, it doesn't matter who you beat, but only who you've played and how many games you've won. For example, if you beat a 400 player and loose to a 3000 player, you'd have the same rating as if you lost to a 400 and beat a 3000.

It's really best to just ignore your rating, especially when you've only got a few games under your belt. It's going to jump around a lot until you get several games rated and a mix of wins and losses.
